Modern Vespa

Today I installed a mount for my GPS and thought that I would share some pictures with you. The mount was purchased from Touratech-USA who are distributors for RAM products who manufacture a variety of components which can be mixed and matched to suit almost any mounting situation. Touratech also make their own mounting products. They have a very good web site. The parts I bought were: an adapter for the mirror stalk, a medium size arm and a ball mount to accept a cradle for my Street Pilot. The pics should be self explanatory. The next step is to install a power socket in the left hand black panel as soon as the parts arrive!

Nice one! The thing I disliked about the BV mirrors is that they are too small in diameter and I had to modify the mount.

BurgerBob, what is the small LCD screen under your GPS? Great looking setup.

It's a Sigma BC800 cycle speedo/computer. One of my gripes about the GT200 was the fact that it didn't have a tripmeter. This was easily rectified, however, by the installation of the BC800. Not only is it an accurate speedometer, but it also records trip distance, ride time, total time, maximum speed, total distance and a clock! For around $26 it's one of the best add-ons I've made! I have a Garmin Quest also. Did you get your Quest mount from Touratech too? Is it the same setup as described above?

@Cindy : What is the red button for on the right side of the handlebar???
Here in Europe it's a non functioning black one.

Nice job on the mount Bob. From the look of things, you have wasted no time getting into the mods. I like the idea of a trip meter very much.


Kristof the red button is an emergency shutoff. It is also used by a number of people to turn the bike off when you finish riding. Nice safety device to have. Just don't push it in and not know you have done it. Many of us have done this and not been able to turn the bike on, Beale.

That looks awesome. I have a Legend C that's not doing anything these days, so I may have to do that in the spring.

That's the engine cutoff switch - only to be used in emergencies. Something you find in the US - It's only apparent function (other than to cut off the engine in a true emergency) is to make people believe that their scoot is broken because it wont start

Ram Mounts ROCK! I use this mount for my GPS and my digital camera. Rock Solid all the time.

Another vote for the RAM stuff. I'm using their AquaBox to put my Treo in - plenty of pics.

My memory is like swiss cheese - so I was afraid I'd forget that the GPS was there, and walk away have a missing GPS, and not be able to find my way home and have to start over in a new town.

RAM makes great stuff, but for me with a little screwing around, it all can be loosened, pop out, and be sold for Boones Farm, lottery scratch-offs, or Yu-Gi-Oh! cards. If you haven't been asked to buy a laptop from a vagrant storing it in a plastic bag on the streets of San Francisco, you haven't lived.

As it took me quite a bit of time to work out what part you actually used to fit the U-bolt on the mirror stem (the RAM Mount site is notoriously bad for finding specific parts), I figured I would post the part number of the RAM-U-BOLT ADAPTER FOR HANDLEBARS: RAP-319U

Yep. I should have moved my old GPS Mount thread into Project Reports a long time ago, then the part (and the thread) might not have been so hard to find.

Oh well, I'm glad it confirms I found the right part!

So I installed the U-bolt adapter last night and it seems like the U-bolt itself is way long for the application. Did you folks cut yours down?

I'm a bit undecided whether I want to keep the ball part on the mirror stem in place on a day to day basis as it is not the most elegant thing going.

I cut my extra off and am leaving it on.

I'm taking it off. More than anything else because the mirrors have been stolen twice already!

A dremel with a fiber-reinforced cutoff wheel is one of my favorite tools. I leave mine on all the time. But the, I've got a lot of random stuff bolted to my scooter, so it, umm, blends in. You're right, though, it's not all that elegant.
