I returned home, put out some work fires, and can now think about looking at the many photos I took while riding.
They are roughly in chronological order and begin with getting the Grom ready to ride from Chicago to Madison. It is a tiny machine that, once I got used to it's twitchy ride, was fun. Then as we progressed through the rides, including Dave's famous gravel roads, bulls running and a passing horse and buggy. Early morning ride out of Chicago.
Grom Shadow
Dave caught us on the way to Richland Center.
The number one reason for me coming was to see Sam. But I would probably attend anyway as it is such a nice bunch.
Running of the Bulls.
Horse and buggies were on the roads.
Gravel roads were all smooth this year.

You got a better picture of the Amish girl than I did. Only after looking at my picture did I realize she was hauling milk in cans...the last time my dad did that was probably when I was three. In my picture I caught her looking over her shoulder at us after we'd passed. Wonderful having you and Sam ride with us again. |

Day two
We had a rather optimistic route for the day, roughly 140 miles. Unfortunately, found more gravel, unintended, especially SIX miles of it. The longest route was about as wide as a gravel driveway. Halfway through my GPS routefinder was telling me I was off course.
We crossed over the Wisconsin river, rode the above-mentioned gravel, and came out in Boscobel, a small old river town. Don't think I ever knew that it was where the Gideon bible originated. I'd originally intended it to be a coffee stop, but we wound up splitting up with some hitting a funky diner and others a bar. Back on the road, crossed the river again, and would our way over to Prairie du Chien on the Mississippi. About a half mile from our lunch stop, wmak's scooter went belly up by the engine abruptly dying and wouldn't restart. Not the worst spot (again), and thanks to luckyscroller tailing us, we had a backup. It was pretty warm, and most of the group thought the 30 minute wait was best in air condition, while wmak thought heading across the river to Iowa was the better use of time. As his scooter was dead on the back of the truck, he borrowed MadisonSully's scooter from Bill. Oakwood Joe and I joined him. Crossed the channel bridge and main bridge, and I thought he'd put a foot down and turn around. I saw a road sign saying the old scenic river town of McGregor was a mile away and thought "I hope he thinks about it." He turned in that direction, we had a nice ride along the train tracks next to the river and down Main St. Still wondering when the turnaround would be, he pointed to a sign for Pikes Peak State Park, 3 miles south. The heat wasn't as bad as thinking we were going to miss lunch. Wove our way up the bluff on a curvy road, got to the park....where he turned around. Stopped for photos on the way back (can anyone resist a pink elephant? 8) ).Pulled into the parking lot just as they were sitting down. Some of the riders had pulled out in Boscobel (IIRC), and we lost a couple more....not surprising as we had two 83 year olds, and Bill and Sam were off to Wildcat Mountain alone. Headed up the ridge, stopped at one of the many cheese factories along the way (this one specializing in goat cheese), then the Apple festival where you could chose among THREE fried cheese curd vendors and buy raffle tickets for a gun, but had to look a bit for apple products. Rolled out of town, stopped for some apple p.i.e, and back to the hotel. Good day, except for the gravel. And Warren's dead scooter. Ready to ride
Sam and Bill. The Dynamic Duo.
Erm, where did THAT gravel come from?
Boscobel. Russ Bees brought the bugle!
Home of the Gideon Bible. Cool interior, from what I could see through the window anyway.
Mark was obviously moved....
Great cinnamon rolls. Thanks for the sample Bill!
Not the most scooter-friendly town, it seems.
Crossing the Wisconsin-again.
Warren's scooter threw up a bit....
wmak's off for Iowa.
McGregor
Wisconsin's off to the right....
If you can't take a good picture of the bridge, take one with the pink elephant.
Lunch. Finally.
Cheese stop. We got ours!
Never know what you'll find along the road....
Dinnah!

Sunday
The past two years I've worked on Sunday routes, and everyone had had enough riding and took off on me (to be fair, the Minneapolis people had over 200 miles to ride home yet). This year the crowd thinned out as expected, but Oakwood Joe, CubsKing and gitder decided to ride...at least part of the way. Nice morning weather, roads still mostly shady in the hills. Stopped at Elephant Trunk rock along the road. Nice stop. Gitder and CubsKing pulled off to head home, leaving just me and Joe to return to the hotel. At least I had a tail-gunner.
People are already asking about next year.....so let's see. Round barn!

Hey, just got back from Cincy. Seth (Ohio's best Vespa tech) tells me that the recall covers parts and labor. Hope to have the GTS back on the road next week. I will get some video up, just haven't taken the time yet. Great photos Bill!

Ruh-roh
Well, I went to pick up the GTS today, went on a test ride, and as soon as I got back to the shop, the engine died. We couldn't get it started again, so Seth is going back to the drawing board, so to speak. We hope it's just a matter of getting the fuel mapping software squared away, having eliminated all the other problems. I'll keep y'all updated.

Finally
Well, I got the GTS back today. Seth found out that the real culprit was the injector, but the fuel pump was under recall, so Piaggio did furnish a new one. The coolant was leaking a little around a corroded pressure valve, so Seth replaced that. Everything is working just fine, so I hope to get a few more rides in before the crap winter weather sets in. Tomorrow looks like a likely candidate for a pretty fall ride.
