HI Guys ,
a quick intro-
thanks for accepting me joining .
Rory from Wilderness SA
54 years old , ride mostly ADV riding and Dirt bikes.
Enjoy rebuilding bikes / working on them .

My 250 GTS is 8 years old , so i figures time to change the drive belt .
got a Malossi kit but need your advise please .

if i do speeds over 110 /120 km /h there is a smell of hot rubber (think the belt is rubbing somewhere ?
or drive pulley is pushing belt out too much ?

any ideas ?

thanks , and have a cool week .

If it's coming from the variator area, open it up. Something is definitely wrong, and you need to figure out what it is right away.

yip

the variator is squeezing to far closed and the belt is rubbing against the motor casing .
i put the lighter weights in and its a completely different bike - really CRAP .
bike reves at 9500 rpm , no acceleration or top speed .

there is a spacer washer between the two halves of the variator that if i put in a thicker one ....... should solve this ?

sorry -
to add -
going to replace the 15g weights
the 14 gram weights take the problem away ........ but cant live with the bike like that ....only slightly faster than my honda GROM .

my belt is obviously climbing out running too high on the variator ,

Did you change the spring in the clutch?
What belt are you using?

HI ,
yip , spring was changed , (included in the Malossi kit ) and yesterday 15 gram rollers were put back in , after trying the 14 g rollers.

15 g hold the rpm right in its torque peak .(6000-6500)
The 14 Gram are not worth trying . revs are way too high (9000- 9500 rpm )
resulting in lower acceleration and lower top speed.

the STD set up is even lower rpm and not as smooth variator action as the Malossi

using an OEM belt .

I spoke to a mate that has the same GTS250 and he also has the problem of belt slightly rubbing when riding it hard at 130kph or over .

Also a smell of hot rubber when riding a long distance at high speeds .
So... will stay with it as it is now and not hammer it over 120 kph.

have a cool day .
regards
Rory

Just curious. Are you using a different counter spring. With Malossi and smoke and mirrors it comes with a white spring.
Maybe why the recommended 14 doesn't work for you.
