Changing belt on my MP-3 250.
Is it necessary to purchase the Buzzetti locking tool for this job?
I purchased the factory service manual but it is not much help.
Thanks in advance!

makes it easier than trying to rig something up to hold the vari so you can torque the nut to spec.

don't forget to get a new nut as on the 250's they are 1 time use nuts.

OAD, with all my respect, but what make you think so? Have I missed something?

Youtube is your "Training Video's" my friend...

Search Youtube for Vespa GTS Belt Change, engine is very similar to MP3 250.

I started with the Buzzetti, its a little weak, but it does work.
I purchased one from someone in the UK, that is welded steel that is rock solid. It will last forever... It's been to long, don't remember who I got it from but it was home made in his shop. Maybe someone here will remember who it is, but expensive with shipping to US.

The shaft threads will gall if you reuse the nut on certain models.
No idea the exact list?

On my BV350 a new nut should be used every time.
I reused on my MP3 400 so I hope that was not a mistake?

As far as I'm aware, only those variator nuts with a built-in Belleville washer need to be replaced each time. I thought the Piaggio Leader engines were the last to use those, which would make the GT200 the last model which needed them.

The 250cc Quasar engine certainly doesn't need to have a new variator nut each time.

The only time I've encountered galling is when using stainless steel nuts and bolts.

BV350 does not need the nut replaced each service. Not even the new Vespa 300's need that anymore.

Well, yep, those "self-locking" nuts with plastic inserts are dedicated for single-use. Luckily, my 250cc's nut was of other kind... Unluckily, a truck solved any questions with my 250cc

Yea, I was wondering about that...
All my "Nuts" are reusable on my MP3/250 and GTS/300.
So it must be something that is not used anymore by Piaggio.

If you know how to release them they are re-useable. Usually you just push the center locking pin back out from the back or pry it out from the front if no access from the back.

No Piaggio scooter uses a Nyloc nut for a variator nut. If you found one on your scooter, that'd be down to some previous owner or mechanic.
