Looking at a 2010 MP3 500…
The owner says that he doesn't have the red key… He tells me that he ordered an extra "black key" from ScooterWest and had his locksmith "recode" it..
How essential is the "red key"? I don't understand the purpose of it exactly… I know that I can code keys with it…
Maybe reset maintenance codes?
Is there any other purpose?

The Red (or primary) key is needed for the following
* Activating and pairing replacement daily-use (black) keys
* Resetting maintenance periods (I think) its the little wrench-symbol

When I bought my Mp3 the owner had lost the primary key in his garage so I only had the single daily-key. The daily-key worked fine.

Until one day I locked my daily-key in the trunk and had no spare key to unlock the trunk with. I immediately considered buying and cutting a replacement daily-key but I learned it would be next to useless unless paired with the bikes electronics. When using un-paired key the bike is rev and speed-limited to about 1,500 RPM or 5 mph. Thus an un-paired key can only be used to start the bike, unlock the trunk/gas, and move the bike around; no to ride.

Fortunately in my case the owner found the primary-key and mailed it to me so now I have my daily-use key and a backup.

So its up to you if you want to take the bike with only the single key. But that single-key must be protected at all costs as you are screwed if you don't have it.

I asked my local Mp3 dealer and they said it would be about $1,000 for a new bike-computer and two keys to go with it.

So definitely use the fact that it only has a single "daily" key as a negotiating point when you bargain for the bike. Its a $$$ to re-do the electronics otherwise to get a new set of keys.

If you have a cloned daily service (black) key then you don't need the red (master) key any more, as you have a cloned spare. You do not need the master key to reset service icons. If you lose one of your current two keys, get the other cloned again ASAP - a spare is (almost) priceless!

I feel the importance of having a red key is not as important as it used to be.

all key chips can be copied. black or red. and copies are much cheaper than relying on piaggio for over priced lost key solutions. worst scenario is having no keys. but even then its much, much cheaper to have ecu re-virginized to accept new key set.

So…
If I buy this MP3 …
I can use the existing Black Keys to clone more spares?

Yes. Fee is reasonable. I used a local mobile locksmith. Another option is insured mail-in to a reputable source, like this: https://www.af1racing.com/store/Scripts/prodView.asp?idProduct=57189

You'd definitely want to do that right away, though! And the missing red key is worth a negotiating point on the purchase.

Yes to A-F 1 racing and having a key cloned, which Should then function as a master. Yes to back up keys and maybe a spare backup if you are prone to misplaced or lost keys.

No, it *won't* function as a master key. It'll still just be a clone of the service key.
