Vespa gynaecology
Tonight I fixed a few things that were bugging me. I was never happy with the routing of the throttle cable straight out the top of the carb it was rubbing on the side panel , the twist grip only ever opened the carb the way and the headlight chrome was flaking off (top quality part).
I fitted a new headlight, an angled pipe to the carb, new cable and a larger cam to the twist grip, the carb is now fully open in less than turn.
I made a school boy error when replacing the throttle cable and had to do it all over again also I forgot how tight it is in the headlight bowl especially after fitting the larger cam the whole thing took 3 hrs

The very seat I will be trying to fit to my recent build.

On the throttle cable, rubber grommet, I always put a cable tie around the grommet tightening it against the 90 degree elbow and at the cable outer, this stops the throttle catching on the end and staying open. Just a thought.

Great build & love the colour.

That scooter is beautiful. I just found this thread and went through whole build. Would you mind telling me the color or code of that paint? I would love to use it someday on my scooter.

Thanks Ricky for the code. It's so hard choosing a color. I'm also drawn to Robins Egg blue, but that color seems really hard to get right. Keep thesis thread going, I'll follow it.

Aaaaaaa bugger, another day another rebuild, after the wettest 120 miles I have ever experienced coming back from Worthing music mania, all my lights gave up about a week later I lost all my gears and my head set needed tightening up now that it had settled from the first build. So time for a rewire and engine split.

Lessons learnt and update
A quick update on my scoot, Engine - the main shaft was bent God knows how and the cruciform thread was stripped so another partial rebuild was carried out with new main shaft, selector shaft , cruciform and a sip clutch fitted. Lesson learnt why did I not replace the loom during the first build 29 only for a bespoke beadspeed loom it was a right pain to rewire with the cables in the frame, anyway engine is back in the the headset is back on and the loom is replaced hopefully on the road for the weekend.

Honestly I give up , managed to get about a mile on my newly rebuilt engine and my flywheel started rubbing on the guard I am sure I tightened the bugger right up. The woodruff key is done in and the cranks not looking to good either, should have guessed it was a bitch to start and I thought the timing was off. [/img]
Time, trouble and money eh

Good to see it evolving, even with some tough breaks. I'm getting back to my GTR engine build again after using up my spare time keeping the GTS tip top, rustproofing yadayada... Keep at it, we all know getting it back on the road is worth it

2 years on the road
So I've been running this scoot for 2 years or approx 3000 miles and it's been apart and back together more times than I can remember, it's on its 3rd engine I've replaced the loom and rebuilt the headset, I get the piss taken out of me by some mates as I am always in the garage or missing runs but it's been a great learning curve and I know I can fix most failures on a vintage Vespa. If you are thinking about a rebuild go for it. This is the latest addition.

They are certainly a nice speedo. I just wish there was an option to switch functions - in particular I would like to be able to get the cylinder head temp to display on the the biggest readout. The clear lens is very shiny and I find I need to shade it and peer intently to see what the temp is.

Does this motor have that crank from the Scooterotica guy?

The set up on the sip speedo is a bit clunky, and I can't read the display with my sunglasses on but that may be the polarising lenses, apart from that it is a great bit of kit. Unfortunately they could not get the flywheel side to repair my damaged crank so this engine has a mazz race crank - unmodified

Update
After the catastrophic failure of my malossi 166 I have a mildly tuned pollini 180 in the scooter but it is not staying for much longer, mallossi 221 MHR, with a maz 60mm bell crank, MRP manifold for RD350 reeds, BGM 22t clutch, BGM 65t primary,T5 gearbox, parmakit gnition on a set of Vespa PX 200 cases that will be ported and matched to the kit and reed valves.

Dead 166
This fell apart last year, I only stripped it for the reusable parts for another 166 last week. Think I had a close call with the hub, a brand new piaggio one will be going on the 221.

PX2 cases
The PX 200 cases I got as a job lot with another project scoot were previously ported for reeds and a Mallossi kit, I will have to dremmel the MRP reed block to match the casings not the other way about.

Straightforward enough, pulling the cables through the frame is a pain but you only need to do that if you are using the extension cabling, I had no space in my headset so I fitted the black box in the tool box and I installed the wiring for the fuel warning light same time, it works good but only on main or dipped beam. Full beam draws to much to let the speedo work even with a vespatronic.

Impressive. Be interested to hear how you get on. My rebuild has slowed due to lack of funds at the moment. I did do some frame work and confirmed the original colour is Chiara de Luna (Moonlight = light silver) so that's banked for when the respray is possible.

The MHR is now in, I put the bits together but it was built by TASS, running in at the moment but it is a monster and will lift the front wheel in second with a blip of the throttle.
