Hello all,

Great forum. I'm from Holland and planning on buying a Vespa LX 50 or a ET 4. I will participate in a 5 day rally going from Nijmegen, The Netherlands, to lake Garde in Italy. After that I am planning on going on Holiday to Italy again with my girlfriend on the Vespa LX 50. A lot of adventures plant for 2014 so to speak.

When I buy a scooter I will update this topic.

Thanks for al the information.

Welcome to MV from the Great White North!

I suggest something with more power for that kind of road trip, if at all possible. An ET4 would be much better than an LX50. Sounds like a wonderful adventure.

I can't that would mean I should get my motorcycle drivers license. In Holland you can drive a 50cc scooter with your car drivers license. Doing that kind of trips on a 50cc scooter is the whole point of it. On a Vespa 300 GTS it would be a walk in the park. On a LX 50 it will be an adventure.

Welcome to MV from the great American Midwest (or good-enough, I suppose )

What part of Holland are you from?

The 50cc adventure sounds interesting. It would make a great report for the (somewhat) less adventurous of us here! And don't forget pictures. We LOVE pictures.

I wil keep updating this topic as soon as I get a Vespa.

I live in Enschede. It is a medium big town according to Holland standards an is right next to the border with Germany.

Do a search for the Scooter Cannonball threads on MV as well as on Google to find the Cannonballers' blogs. There a few who have done it on 50cc bikes. Truly an excellent adventure.

If you do it, post here on your trip or on a blog. If you do we will eagerly follow you

What is it with you Dutch guys and long trips on small scooters? I met these guys in Peru, http://www.honda50.cc/ but I can't imagine doing a trip like yours two up on a stock 50cc 4 stroke. If you could punch it up to 80cc without telling anyone, I think you'd have a much better time, especially going up hills, which I'm told there are a few of between Holland and Italy.
Lots of luck and enjoy the adventure.

Wow! Thank you all for the kind words. The first time that I will be traveling to Italy I will be on my own. The second time I'm planning on my girlfriend wil join me. She will be buying a Vespa as well. We won't be traveling together on one scooter. That would be kind of problematic. I am planning on traveling as light as possible. So no camping during the trip but only hostels and hotels.

Most people think i'm mad. I do to.

I lived there for three years back in the 80's. I still have contact with my former neighbours. I was always treated very nicely which is more than I can say for some places I've been. I was also impressed with how the architects and planners created private areas / gardens for people in such little space.
To relate it back to scooters it is kind of like creating a lot of power and comfort out of 49cc displacements.

You Dutch folks are cool in my opinion, very friendly folks, and humorous.

The tour you've planned though sounds like more than an adventurous outing, considering the hills of Germany, and the bigger hills called the Alps. They drive full speed too.

With 50cc, you are not allowed on the Autobahn, so it may take days for you to even get through Germany on rural roads. It would be pretty though, pretty long too.

I doubt you'll be able to get through the Alps though. They won't let you on the main roads to get through.

In Germany, the new Gov't is considering making a Toll for foreign travelers, so bring along some extra cash. Better yet, give me some money, I have connections. Not to worry. Just bring some Old Genever, and we can discuss the details.

Cheers.

PS: Welcome to the Forum.

The plan is to avoid all the highways. With a 50cc scooter you are allowed to drive on the B-roads. That is the route I will take.

All the main roads in the Alps are open for scooters so I don't see why it would be a problem to use them. The Toll that the Germany is planning on will only be for the Autobahn so it is of no concern for my journey. And if I have to pay Toll in the end I will pay it.

This year I went with my Honda S2000 on a road trip and drove 3500 miles flat out. The gas bill was of epic proportions so the costs I have to pay for driving the Vespa to Italy will be very small in proportion to the costs I had last year.

But I'm not complaining the fun we had was epic! Laughing emoticon Laughing emoticon Laughing emoticon Laughing emoticon

I really love the Netherlands. I think I only could live in Italy, Austrio or Norway. because I like the nature and the more laid-back culture over there better than the dutch way of life.

I visited New York for the first time this year. My first encounter with Americans was very good. Very friendly and really helpful.

It is. There are Piaggio Zip scooters in holland with 23.4 horsepower. The engine of the Zip is in essence the same as the LX 50 2T. Here is a small clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvZ_XQ4Kvuo this particular one has a motorcycle plate on it.

I wouldn't go that far. I would modify the CDI and remove the variator ring. That would give me a top speed of about 40 to 50 mph. One thing I most certainly will be fitting is a sports exhaust. I know that it doesn't help power wise on a 4 stroke engine but i like the sound of them and since the day I'm buying engined powered vehicles I put sports exhausts on them.

I like the looks of this Tecnigas one. External inline image provided by member with no explanatory text

The Dutch are a moped scooter crazy nation. Just take a look at this article:

http://bicycledutch.wordpress.com/2013/02/23/the-moped-menace-in-the-netherlands/

I'm sure the 50cc scooter that the OP has is of the "heavy" variety -- not a snorfiets that is only going max 25 km/h legally.

I'd love to see that crazy moped scooter scene in Finland. No helmets and riding on the sidewalk would be the thing!

That said, I did a 1000 km tour on a Honda Zoomer (Ruckus) 50cc scooter this soon-to-be last year. It was great fun.

Welcome and good luck sounds like a great idea! The Alps could be a problem though, I had a 50cc once and took on a 50 mile round journey across our Pennine hills - unfortunately it was too much for it, it limped back home and then never ran correctly again.
My surname is Holland as well so it's a double welcome from me
