Experts.

I just picked up a '68 SS180 with round headlight sight unseen. (I'm assuming its really a '67) and I had some quick questions.

1. Is the speedometer and headlight the same as those for US Rallys and Sprints?

2. I think the tail light is a repro, but what type should it have?

3. Did they come with leg shield trim or was it an accessory? If so or not... what is the correct trim number if applicable?

What I know. modified front shock, not original paint, SIP tubeless Rims, wide tires.

Feel free to chime in with any other miscellaneous knowledge I should know about US spec SS180s.

Nice ss ... it seems to have orig paint ... from the pjaggio emblem in the front it should be prior to 1967 ... after that it came with a romboidal one not square ... the wheels are wider from factory ... the rear lamp is ok check if it is siem branded... i think it is not one of the latest ... could be that someone change the headlight unit ? The trim for that model should be ulma 044 ... look for the rabbit on it ... the carb n filter is the correct one ....Congratulations enjoy it...

I know its not original paint.

The wheels / rims are tubeless from that place that sells scooter parts from Vietnam and the tires are from there as well.

I was told the rear light was not orignal... I think its meant to have the ugly tractor rear light, but screw that I refuse.

More trim to hunt down... damn it.

Nice! That looks like a 68 to me! The only year with a round headlight. The tail light on there is not original. The 68 was the only year with the tuna can tail light. It took me a year and a half to find the correct one for my 68.

The 68 speedo is like a Rally. I'll see if I can find some photos. The 68 SS 180 was the last of the Sport series and the last piston ported motor.

When that motor hits the sweet spot at about 50 mph it just.........soooo right!

I just got the VIN number. It lists as a 67.

VSC1T002914x

Not sure what that means as far as tail light goes.

according to this dude. http://www.scooterbbs.net/board/DCForumID1/32217.html

West coast imported SS180's got the round headlight (sealed beam) in 67, while east coast ones continued with the trapezoidal ones. In 68, all models got it.

I got it from Utah, so its almost certainly a west coast import.

I'm hoping this means that my scoot had the 67 style tail light as opposed to the fugly tractor one from 68. Even so... I refuse to put one on.

The 68 tail light is not a "tractor" light.

Bar Italia would probably be the best source for all the little details. Nice to see that the dust covers are there. Those took me 2 years to find!

What is does the 68 headlight look like?

I'm probably not going to sweat the details on this bike. I bought it to use a daily driver. Both my GS150s and my GS160 MK I are all getting work done this winter. I really don't need to spend any more money.

I will call Bar Italia tomorrow, they are doing a nut and bolt on one of my scoots.

edit: Just found this link... shows an all original 67 with round headlight... it is meant to have the ugly taillight.

Soooo.... an update.

I got it delivered and it wont stay running. It will start for a bit, but runs rough and has almost no response to the throttle. Unfortunately I had to leave for two weeks, but I have a friend who is going to clean do a carb rebuild for me.

I must say, I hate the fat tires, the tubeless rims, and the 226 pipe on it.

I already scored a stock exhaust on ebay, now I just need to find new wheels and tires.

What are the differences between GS160/SS180 rims and GS/3 or T4 rims. I have a few of 10" rims laying around they are asymmetrical like I suspect the SS180 wheels are, but is it a different asymmetrical?

update: ok... GS160/SS180 are non-offset... got it.
