Hey everyone, I'm excited to say that I just entered the vespa world and cannot wait for all of the experiences I'll have and the information I'll learn. However, I happen to choose a pretty poor time of year (right now it's a sweltering 18 degrees f outside Razz emoticon). Here's my situation, I would love to use this time to get to know my scoot by starting off doing some minor maintaince, but i don't have a garage to use, just a basement. Is there a chance that, if I needed to start her, I could hook up a hose to the exhaust to direct the fumes outside without messing anything up? I can't easily go in and out since immediately outside the door to the backyard, there are a few steps up to the ground. Thanks for reading and I look forward to getting to know all of you. Also, if it makes a difference, it's a 79 p125x with a p200 engine that has been bumped up to 210.

good that you posted that. Well done on getting your first vespa. I probably wouldnt put a hose on the exhaust. 2 strokes run by back pressures that can effect the engine, but it actually depends what you are trying to achieve. If you are tuning it, it wont work for you at all. Someone else will chime in with some advice thats probably better guided, but for me its a no.

Youll figure a way of running it outside im sure, the basement will fume up pretty quick and be really uncomfortable for you.

Whats it your trying to do with your tinkering?

DO NOT run your scoot indoors. You'll gas yourself to death. Seriously.

I hear you guys loud and clear. As far as the tinkering, not much as of right now. I do, however, think it may need the clutch cable adjusted at some point. Most of all though, I haven't had it long and I want to gawk at it. Lol. And to look, to learn, to become acquainted with it, change the oil perhaps, etc.

Hey Kenyo, welcome to the forum.

Totally understand your desire to gawk at and tinker with your scoot, but fercrissakes DO NOT RUN IT IN THE BASEMENT.

There's plenty you can do in the meantime... clean it, polish it, lube it, replace cables, check the brakes, make sure the wiring's good, change the oil... When the weather gets better you can take it outdoors and fire it up.

Thanks for the info guys, it's much appreciated. Very true SoCalGuy, I'm sure all that busy work is plenty to keep me busy. I suppose I'm just very antsy to have her running since I've haven't had much ride time. The spring seems sooooo far away now. Lol

... and it IS.. just teasin' but I know that feeling. I'm really glad to be home in CA now after 7+ years in Det. and Chicago.. I remember the feeling when the 1st snow hit.. day after day, week after week.. Aaaack! it'll never end..

.. but it does end, and in the meantime you can do some of that crazy OCD stuff like take a toothbrush to your tire treads and take off your turn signal lenses so you can get in the plastic groove and get every last bit of nasty ol' grime out of there.. Come spring you'll be able to eat off your bike! I get goosebumps just thinking about it! Razz emoticon

Give all your rubber and plastic bits a nice once over w/ some plastic/rubber conditioner.. get creative with your time and your bike will sparkle like the stars of a billion galaxies!

Have fun!.. oh! how about a couple pics? I can see it in your avatar, but that's so small.

I would actually empty the petrol tank & carb of fuel before I left it under the house for a few months. A spark could set the thing off.
Clutch is an easy fix. Drain the engine oil, 11mm socket, bolt is just underneath the gear selector. Let the oil pour into a clear container and replace oil bolt with magnetic oil bolt. I like to inspect the oil after 24 hours just to see if theres any debris in there.

I would start to build up a specialised tool set, could cost around $45 for all the tools.

Clutch Compressor
Clutch Holder
Clutch Puller
Flywheel Holder
Flywheel Puller
Piston Stopper

Check the forum for tips & tricks, youtube for videos, generally all P range Vespas are the same, unless they have been modified for reed valve or have installed a PHBH carb or similar, which if you have the 210 installed I would imagine there will be a Dellorto 30mm PHBH carburettor on there and a aftermarket exhaust.

an empty tank is actually worse than a 3/4 full tank. Ive sent my scoots up and down the country on our hercs as luggage if theres free space. The loadmasters wont have them on board unless the tank is at least a 1/4 full even if its clean, because of the risk of explosion from an empty tank.
Of course if you do have a house fire, a tank full of petrol will inferno. But then a fire in the basement = house gone anyhow id most likely

Oh there's lots you can do! Good suggestions above. I would also suggest getting the Haynes manual and just reading through it.

When you think of something use the search here...you probably won't find what you were looking for but you will run across some interesting information and maybe even learn something!

Browse the suppliers sites..Scooters O, Scooterwest, SIP...just be careful not to hit "buy" too often!

And yeah...more photos!

Exactly! I can't wait to let loose that side of me. It has been far too long since I've been able to work with my hands.

SubEtherBass, I'm sure you're not the only one. I always thought the words "fun" and "fumes" were a bit similar for a reason. Razz emoticon

Also, sounds like you all have raised another question. Is it dangerous to store her in the basement to begin with?

Anywho, here are a couple shots.

I have worked at shops in the past that did use an arrangement like you describe to vent the exhaust in the winter; some cities require it for vehicle repair businesses. you've probably seen this at car repair places if you live in a cold climate.

One shop i worked out used a shop-vac with two hoses, one on the suction side, one on the exhaust side. They had a piece of PVC pipe with a on the end of the suction hose and it was put onto the exhaust, sucking the exhaust out and then blowing out the exhaust hose to vent outsde.

There is a chance of petrol dripping from the carb or other potential petrol drip areas. So again unpleasant petrol fumes or damged floor (if its carpet) or fire hazard.

Best to do some good house keeping, de clutter dont store stuff in front of switches where dust can build up behind... that sort of thing

Well, I think the basement idea is a no go. Our natural gas furnace is in the basement and having the fume-y scoot down there by the pilot light just sounds like I'm asking for a world of trouble.
