Been a while but the 90SS is starting look like a vespa again. Only the best parts were selected from places like Mauro Pascoli in Italy, Vespa Klassiekers in Holland and Scooter Centre/SIP in Germany.

As as this is a foreign model (New Zealand) it also had bar end indicators which I am not going to replace for wiring simplicity, which means I had to replace the gas tube as it came in two pieces to allow gas action without disturbing the wires in the handlebar tube. This also allowed me to use readily available SS90 loom which I receiced a beautiful loom from Mauro Pascoli, it was expensive but well worth it.

Looks nice! Just wondering if you are going to add a dummy tank or keep it original?

Nice one adwood how, you will love the colour! This is the original Pavone Blu from the 60s so does not have an overcoat or lacquer. iPhone does not do it justice but it is is amazing in the flesh.

Many SS90 went to the states? I know quite a few went to Canada but I think most went without the dummy tank like Germany and NZ model.

The later models without the tanks were marketed in Italy as the GPS (gruppo piloti speciali) from what I understand.

Do you have any plans for the engine or leaving her stock?

No I want to keep it as per the GPS look, rather keep it as original as possible rather than use a remade dummy tank.

Hi Giramassi -

No, I don't think any were sold into the United States. All here have been imported after the fact. It took me a good while to find one. I love the peacock blue. The engine in mine was recently rebuilt (stock) and I'm planning on leaving it that way. It's very peppy and works great for my type of riding here in New Orleans.

Love the pictures of the restoration - Keep them coming. I actually ordered the Pascoli seat as well you referenced on the other thread.

I am glad to hear that you are leaving it stock as these bikes need to be seen! Mine only had the stator re-wired, bearing/seals replaced and new rings plus clutch plates replaced. You will love the seat its so beautifully made.

I seriously envy you guys. The 90SS is my dream.
Too rare or too expensive (or both), especially here in the US.

I may try to find one back home in Italy next time I visit, even though, from what I can tell, prices are skyrocketing over there as well ...

Hear! Hear! I'd love one, but I'd be compelled to do it in the Arthur Francis Rally Master scheme I so love.. maybe change the front fender from a union jack to something else to make it a little more my own.. but the pathfinders, dual switches and nobby spare would definitely be a part of the end product.

Hi Adwood if you are thinking of restoring your SS90 horn then you can get this one that's made in Italy by Grabor, which are used by piaggio as a part manufacturer.

I was not expecting it to be that nice but was blown away when I received it from the scooter-centre in Germany. It's not chromed but polished zinc plated which blends in well with the leg shield trim.

Thanks giramassi!

I'm actually having mine restored by place in Chattanooga TN called SaintsCycleWorks. I was afraid the project would be a bit much for me to take on to get it right.

I felt the same so had it professionally painted then the motor, front steering column was professionally restored including replacing the bearings in the swinging arm.

I was going restore the horn but needed to replace the horn unit itself because it no longer worked being 46 years old so I was going to have the front plate of my old one re chromed and placed on a new one, which I even bought the new rivets for and have the river press for.

But after seeing that it was exactly the same as the original I am not bothering. Also replaced everything electrical with brand new units like the loom and the headlight, the later is still available and made by SIEM which is glass like the original.

I am really enjoying learning about the bike as I put this back together. I am in no rush to compete her.

The engine was professionally built but noted that the barrel was a tad shiny so had it honed professionally, I was lucky I did because I noted that the wrong rings were used. That's ok because I managed to find some original NOS 90/SS90 rings in Italy that when arrived proved that the rings were wrong.

Anyway engine is now in place and now started torqueing the bolts and will commence connecting the cables in the next week.

Thanks Phonkie, also I would prefer original paint work but I really want to preserve this for another 46 years and the pitting was starting to take hold which the artist (painter)corrected.

Not torqued yet! Did not have the socket when I took the photo. I also needed to hook up the rear wheel brake first so the wife can hold it whilst I get it to 78nm.

Congratulations! It's a beautiful project.
Do you know the real reason why there is no serial numbers on the fram?
Normally it's the same than the engine numbers?

I will buy NZ 90ss soon, but I'm suspicious for that..

Thanks,
