Hey there. I have been encouraged to post about my VBB project. Im at the a build stage where I'm encountering problems. I thought the MV crowd would be a good source of help and inspiration.
I didn't buy a complete scooter, but a collection of bits.
1. A 1959 / 1960 rusted out frame.
2. Fuel tank to fit.
3. Headset to fit
4. A bodgey nondescript seized engine - (re) stamped with a 1965 number
3. 1987 PK fork

I have never restored a scooter before, I'm only slightly mechanically minded, and have been making lots of mistakes along the way.
I'll quickly whip through the work done to date, to show you the progress...
The pile of scooter bits I acquired

The engine hadn't turned in a while thanks to the idle adjust spring safely secured in the cases

The carburettor was held together with a phone SIM card. I was wondering what sort of bodge is this..

The frame was pretty shoddy too. I assume it had been sitting outside for decades to have rust mostly along the bottom..

I tried to repair the rotary pad with JB Weld, but the leak-town test when reassembled sucked. I would end up abandoning this engine for this frame..

This kinda held 2-stroke oil in the test, but not really. (I admit the crank was probably stuffed also)

That's some dedication. You can get a complete non-running Vespa for under $1000, it doesn't seem worth it to go to so much trouble w/ a pile of parts.

How much did you pay for all the parts? Maybe if you got it all for less than $500 and you have the skills to do it all yourself.

nice! You might consider hosting this under the "project reports" section - I'm happy to move the thread there if you'd like. Personally, I don't care if it's here or there, but it would help indexing on the site.

Themutedtwo. I spent $700 Aussie dollars ($500-ish USD) , and am hoping to get it running for under $2000 AUD.

Around this time, I dabbled in different sorts of bog. Discovering 'metal-tech' filler was indeed stronger than the pitted steel. Changed tack a few times and spend lots of time sanding. I was back to the apartment now...the garage doesn't have electricity. Hand tools only. Daylight hours only..

I got it to this stage, after painting it with enamel metal paint, when I realised the paint was rubbish. I had thinned it 50% and used a roller, but it had Orange peel throughout.

Another donor engine surfaced. A 150PX. Into which we put new crank, bearings, seals, cush drive, and piston. Big thanks Subetherbass for the engine and Ginchi for help stripping it.
My intention is to get the VBB running with this engine for registration, and maybe upgrade it with a cylinder kit later on.

This crazy project started as a Mille project (ie. more then 30 years old)
I just hope I can get it finished before October this year.

From my research, the tube contained the shifting cables (fill with grease perhaps - before they had good quality housings I suppose)
The gap at the bottom is where I have run the other cables. There's no other gap..

Actually, its a good point. This Pic shows there is a small gap ABOVE and a big gap BELOW the bulkhead. I should ask if cables go below, and wiring goes over it? ... (to keep the electrics dry?)

The tube was for shift cables, if memory serves. When we replaced the floor pan on my Allstate, we removed the tube completely. Mine had a rusted cable hopelessly stuck in it.

More work on fitting the 1987 PK fork into the VBB. Steering stops made from one piece of alloy and fixed, powdercoating finished to the fork leg.
Now, the steering lock position measured, sacrificed an old chisel and epoxyed it on. S/S screws hold it secure.
Hopefully I'll have time to work on more important things now, like the ENGINE!
