I had Kisan headlight and tail light modulators on a previous bike. They work extremely well. I did go through 2 in one year, however, I went out west that summer and put over 24,000 miles on the bike so that may be the reason.

I never had any complaints from other people about using them and I figured it they bothered anyone, at least they saw me.

Are HL modulators distracting at night, seeing your light pulsing on the road?

They are suppose to have a sensor that switches off the monulation when the ambient light is low ( i.e at night, in a tunnel, parking garage)

The headlight modulators come with photocells so they don't work at night.

I think they're a smart idea -- got one for my Kymco P150, listed on the Kisan web site as a direct fit, but could never get it to work. In fact, the P150 won't accept one without a lot of fiddling. Electrical fiddling and a new bike don't go together in my mind.

The Kisan modulator only works with the high beam.

Ignorance post time...

So do these actually flash your headlight from brighter to lower as you're driving? Don't you look a bit like an emergency vehicle? I'm assuming that they're approved and legal.

From what y'all are saying it improves visibility, and that's a good thing. I don't think I've ever seen one though.

They don't look like any emergency vehicles that I have seen.

Check it out at http://www.comagination.com/ this one works off the high beam, modulates from 100% to 18% brightness. Then after dark the photocell turns off the modulator so you have normal headlight function.

Once I get the flashing red light for my helmet...then I'll look like a cop.

Are they legal
They have been approved by National Highway and Safety Department (a federally sanctioned organization) they are proven to save lives. However New York has been known to issue tickets. Claiming there state law overrides federal law stating they are legal in all 50 states. I saw this written up in a AMA (American Motorcycle Association) monthly magazine last year.

Headlight modulators are legal in the US and Canada. In Canada, installing one on your new Vespa will void you total warranty (so I have been told by Vespa Canada).

When I posted this same issue on the Vespa Club of Canada forum, several individuals replied to say that the flashing lights may cause on coming traffic to believe you are giving them a "go ahead" sign. For example, someone in the on-coming lane waiting to turn left in front of you may think you are indicating that they should go ahead. Has this been any one else's experience?

No, they flash much more quickly than a manual flash and they are constant. The other person will see them well before they can mistake it for something else.

Thanks Cindy! That's what I thought as well. I am pretty much sold on the safety value of head light modulators. If it wasn't for the warranty, I would have had it installed already.

Thank you all, very lively discussion.

I'm thinking if the warranty is voided by the Modulator (which is plug n play) I've probably already voided it by installing a Gorilla Alarm.

My Daughter and Son-in-law are both cops, so I don't think the ticket thing will be an issue for me.

I've heard enough to convince me to install one.

Thanks for all the input

It is worth checking with your own Vespa Dealer, as the "all or none" warranty issue may be unique to Canadian Vespa buyers. In the US it may be the case that even if the warranty is void for electrical issues, it remains valid for other mechanical problems.
