I am in the process of replacing my Stebel horn, and I noticed that the fluid container that sits under the front cowling (on my 500) is below minimum. I think it is part of the tilt lock system, but I don't see it in any diagrams, nor does it fall under any fluid categories.

What fluid does it need?

It uses brake fluid. Follow the specs for the brake system.

DOT 4 use only a new sealed bottle

Thanks! I had to search the entire repair manual to find that myself. The *&%&(& cap is on tight, and I can't get to it through a side panel.

Kudos To Piaggio for making a fluid container with a minimum level, but no maximum. And don't forget that you need to remove five panels to get to it. REALLY!

Well, considering the container is of finite size, there is a maximum.... Razz emoticon

And those 5 panels take what, 3 minutes to take off if you are actually concentrating on it? If you bleed the system every couple of years, you can also grease the steering bearings while the plastics are off, so it's not such a chore.

If Piaggio really wanted to smooth things out, they would have put a quick release toggle on the muffler.

If you haven't flushed the system, you're WAY past due.. it should be flushed along with the brakes every year.

I haven't flushed it since I bought it in 2009. I have changed the brake fluid, but not that one. No problems with it what so ever.

You will get correction at the lowest point of the system from water that has built up in the fluid.
Think it was Madison Sully that had to have part of the tilt lock motor replaced do to moisture build up from old fluid.
Brake fluid will absorb water from the air even in a closed system like this.

Wasn't there some sort of odd contraption you need to build in order to flush they system? I seem to remember not many people having much luck with it. Living in a low humidity area I don't believe that we will have a problem as often as people who have to deal with daily humidity. I'll see what they dealer wants to do this for since I have to have my piston replaced for the second time soon

Large syringe and push from the bottom has worked for me quite well. I hear some folks use the syringe and a "T" to flush both sides at once, but I have not tried this; personally I'd wonder how much fluid actually went to each side....

I tried to search for it. I remember a few years back that someone concocted so alien looking device with like a bug spray can and some other weird items. It looked too complicated for me.

You just need some tubing and a 100cc syringe.

That was me. I remember too that others reported success with vacuum bleeders and large syringes. The key is patience, since the fluid flows slowly through the narrow passages.

How many syringes full does it take to flush one side?

One, around 60cc each side did it for me. Suck a little first, then push. Gets air out of the connection.

FYI - After having the front hydraulic lines disconnected. Used the Syringe method to refill. Both sides done, to get a fresh clean bleed, used near a pint of Dot 4 fluid.

After a few weeks the air that wasn't bleed out. Caused the Five Horn low hydraulic pressure warning.

A second Bleed is holding so far.

Interesting the Five Horn Warning also causes Immobilizer Anti-theft system to activate. Engine starts but is RPM limited and runs very rough. Its difficult to get it to exceed 2k RPMs. Try to throttle above 2k RPM to release the tilt lock. It will prime the hydraulic lines to full pressure. It fixes itself. Restart and the five horn warning has stopped.

Bleeding brakes
glad to find this info here, it is an easy job to do on my Honda Rebel but looks like a bigger learning curve on the new Vespa. I tend to run winding, rural roads where around any curve you might slow down fast due to what is crawling down the lane to the next field or 2 guys in big trucks blocking the lane as they socialize.
