Keep On (Kart) Trackin'
Last night a few of us went to a local kart track where some mini-motard guys have a regular Tuesday night session. They were very welcoming and we had a ball.
Special thanks to SubetherBass for the last pic, I love it!! ⚠️ Last edited by Ginch on UTC; edited 1 time

Spring has started making its presence. It's been a week now where our average temp is 20°C during the day and 8°C during the night. My P is in pieces, so I woken up my other baby from hibernation...

Had a busy couple of weeks!
Picked up the 66 Blue Badge smallie (what was it's official name at the time of release?) from Autojack - thanks again! - and started a thread. One small frame for man... gear selection issues? Went for a great ride through some new to me roads with SEB. Picked up a SIP XL... the Road is falling apart after 3 or 4 years. Bought a 20mm P fork from a guy on FB to replace the bendy one on the off roader so I can use it on the go kart track. And tonight I built a smoke tester to check for an air leak. Cost next to nothing and I found my leak in about 2 minutes. I'm happy. This video has not finished uploading yet, so it may not play for a while. |

Looks like it sits in-line so he's generating smoke, which he then blows into the motor with the bike pump so you can see where smoke is escaping to find the leak.
I'm sure I'll be cooking up one of those soon enough... |

The new smallie's a hoot! Original, untouched mechanicals, no major rust, starts right up and runs strong. Has kind of a Brownie vibe to it. Not sure what I'm gonna do with it yet. Has a coat of rock hard battleship grey primer covering the nice factory blue paint.
I ran new cables, fixed a flat ... that's about it. Putts around the neighborhood like a champ. The red smallie quit making spark the day I brought it home. Coincidence or jealousy? |

The smoke machine was based on a youtube video which I now can't find... heat a lump of charcoal, stick it in the jar, and the cardboard smokes. I also used a few drops of oil on the charcoal which worked well. The foil is there just in case to protect the glass jar. Once I had it set up it took me less than 20 seconds to find the leak. Love it.

me time
bailed work yesterday, put a new carb clamp on the Franken camo smallie to solve air leak, ran some errands on it, needs just a bit of throttle and mix adjustment still but overall running well. I also dusted off the neglected P200, which fired right up like the stalwart soldier it always is. could it be?? all 3 running? also just saw that Vermont cashed the check for the red smallie registration! should be all dialed in a week or so!
cheers all. |

Today I finished re-installing the SoCal LML motor into the VBB.
It still needs some carb setup, but when it gets on the pipe, it pretty much jumps out from under you. I pulled accidental power wheelies in both 1st and second gear when it hit the power band. The power band isn't as wide as the Stella and it still has the stock Stella gearing, so it's effectively geared a lot lower since I converted the motor to 8". It goes like crazy with a Malossi 166, JL knockoff pipe, and a flowed crank. |

Ok went to Voodoo's house to see his forge in action! You do not want to be an old useless Vespa case around this madman! Barbecue some Alu anyone! Terry is working on casting an intake for reed block intake for a LML lump as there aren't many out there and they're big $$$. It is crazy to watch engine cases ,cans etc get turned to molten metal and in turn to another object. He's quite the mad scientist with his homemade forge and equipment

Oh boy.... OK, it is a FURNACE, not a forge. But it melts aluminum with just charcoal and a small blower. And we made castings, some of which came out OK, but the reed block is proving troublesome because of the thin walls on two sides. We have done lost foam and also experimented using 3D printed patterns.
Here's a 4" sq hub we made using the lost foam technique
Lots of smoke & fire!

Yeah, and when the other motors see that going on, they generally know they need to behave. John, maybe show the pic to your motor!
So I pulled all the non aluminum from the block before or as it was melting. I removed that 'brass' ring you see in many early cases and also the the two steel brake pins. I noticed 2 things: the brake pins have another small pin in the embedded end to anchor it and that big crank bearing bushing is not brass as I thought and I think has been referred to here occasionally. It's not steel either, it's brittle and snapped in half when I punched it out. Somebody please tell me about these odd, sometimes dimpled inserts that were abandoned on newer motors? Rob? Close up pics later so you can see what I see. |

Once again, it's not a forge for heating steel but a furnace with a crucible in it for melting aluminum or brass. But you have the construction right - Stainless beer keg I cut a big hole in the top to hang a stainless spaghetti cooker basket in, lined w/ 2" of kaowool and a 2'" hole below hooked to a discarded JennAire blower supplying air to the charcoal packed around the crucible. 20 minutes later, molten aluminum. The insulated lid you can just see behind me is made from 3 old Vespa rim halves of various styles & sizes. The molding flasks(or frames) are made from reject rims as well, see the blue one behind me w/ the riser & sprue holes on top?

Few may remember, but my hero was actually Mr Wizard who enjoyed doing dangerous demonstrations with children on black & white TV in the 50's & 60's. I mean the kids helped, they weren't the subjects of his experiments. Don Herbert, thank you for teaching me a lot of basic science and making me realize it was accessible. Never got that vibe from MacGyver or Gilligan's Rube Goldberg antics. Safety equipment? Nah, we'll be OK... |
