Hi Friends

I am changing all the bearings and oil seals on my Vespa GS160 (1963).

The parts are from SIP scootershop (complete bearing and oil seal set).

My question is regarding the crankshaft bearing and oilseal.

First i fitted both the oilseal and bearing from the clutch side but was told by SIP scooters that the correct way is: bearing from clutch side and oil seal from crankshaft side. So i ordered a new oil seal and then did it the way SIP said was the correct way.

BUT BUT I just think that the SIP way looks wrong, the bearing is correct but the oil seal looks way off. It can only fit with the metal side thise way. Please see the way i fittet it first (last picture).

Please see the pictures and let me hear what you think.

This was my first fit before SIP corrected me. Both the oilseal and bearing mounted from the clutch side.

Hope you can help me out

Cheers

you had it right in this picture:

Note: the lip with the spring around it should face the crank case so they hold the pressure during the transfer process.

Thanks ALOT oopsclunkthud

I also thought that my first try looked correct

Think that Martin Silberhorn from SIP scooters owes me a oilseal and perhaps a discount code for all the trouble

Hi oopsclunkthud

Now I am confused?

Now SIPS are telling me that the last try is correct, i just need to flip the oilseal. (bearing in from clutch side and oilseal from crank side, just flipped)

Problem is that it does not fit if I flip/invert it.

Before I ruin more oil seals I need to be sure.

Personelly I think that oopsclunkthud's way is the correct way

Message from SIP Scooters:

Oliver just told me you mounted the oil seal the wrong way round. Correct side, but inverted.

This MUST be the correct way.

The oil seal and bearing is mounted in from clutch side. (first try)

You can not mount oilseal from crank side with metal facing clutch side.

The two pictures, scooterhelp/oopsclunkthud, differ and the scooterhelp pic has been up to discussion before as being faulty. As oops wrote, the lip/spring side always facing the crankcase.
