E- nice tool! Did you just have a soft kickstart but no clutch slipping during riding?

sorry for the late reply Mate, i do have a soft kickstart but i fix the clutch its turn out the clutch plate is too thick so i slap it thin with a sandpaper as for the soft kick i have a worn out piston ring, i guess

good luck on the bike and cheer Mate

So the problem showed up again. Took it maybe 10 miles total. The woodruff key didn't shear when I opened it up. I'm guessing the clutch center had had enough and the taper was gone. Swapped the clutch center with the new one but same spring and plate and didn't put a woodruff key in. Torqued to 50 ft/lbs. Well see how it holds up Sunday when I have more time to work on it.

Ressurecting this one. Rode this maybe 5 miles. Had to disconnect the carb to do some headset cosmetic work and itís been sitting for the last year. Went to play with it and the throttle cable was too short now. Adjusted things and was tuning one more time. 20 kicks and now same soft kickstart.

I talked to Mark Ito and heís had a ton of problems with DRT stuff. Their website it shit. Anyone got any guaranteed compatible parts? Gotta re-read Mr Js BGM setup.

Malcolm, are you familiar w/ the XL2 clutch? It's nice - grips good & easy to squeeze but can be tough to get all the pieces playing together nicely. And needs the XL2 cover with all the rack & pinion bits. Makes it expensive but makes it work well too. Here's SIP's take snipped from their catalog.

T-

Havenít tried it but will do some homework. Iím trying to find something compatible with the DRT tree so I donít have to split the cases anymore than necessary. Iíve been in this motor more than I want to count and itís not even mine! This is for a friend in San Francisco. In the three years Iíve worked/restored this, sheís never had a chance to even ride it. Just see pictures.

She huh? Yeah, she'd love this clutch if it would fit and if she doesn't mind getting the credit card out. No offense ladies, I love it too.

Ahoy friends,

Its time to start throwing money at this baby and see if I sort the problem. Currently Iíve got the DRT tree, stock clutch center (new piaggio), stock clutch spring and plates, basket that came in the motor and bearings that came in the motor.

My plan is to replace only the clutch center, basket, primary and new bearings with DRT proprietary stuff. Try a clean slate that will hopefully have the same stock clutch pull. This motor has had a few questionable parts in it so I canít think of any simpler way to exorcise these demons.

Looking at SIPís website, anybody have any recommendations for the parts I listed?

Ordered Polini straight cut basket and primary, new clutch center, surflex 4 plate clutch kit and spring, new Malossi bearings, DRT woodruff key set, DRT clutch nut and washer for giggles.

Tore apart the motor and found that the DRT tree had come loose of the clutch center and had actually drilled the clutch center out. Metal flakes were in the oil/low spots.

Bearings were removed and compared to the new ones and they are the same dimensions just dissimilar manufacturing companies.

Comparing the baskets to one another, the Polini one looks a little shorter (very unscientific) compared to the basket that was installed. Hopefully the shorter dimension will equate to more of the tree sticking up giving the clutch a little more to grab onto.

New clutch plates are soaking now and Iíll try tonight to get it buttoned up.

Clutch center scored. The section next to the woodruff key slot is raised. Everything else around it is actually lower.

Polini on the left, installed with unknown history on the right. Taking a break to surf while the waves are good.
