Would value some carb help!
Both air filter screw holes are stripped in the carb body. Any tips for repair? I have access to drills/mills, etc.
Also, does anyone know the function of the hole circled in the photo? I canít work out if the brass insert is supposed to be there and, if so, what it does... it feels like itís a blind hole.

on most, but not all, that hole in plugged at the top. it is there as part of the idle circuit I think.

I can ship you a 20/20 carb to replace that one with if you like.

Edit: Post below has it correct, I'd forgotten.

You have older style carb with the idle circuit air jet built into the carburetor. Newer style carbs are blocked off and the idle jet has a hole in the bottom (gas jet) and the top (air jet).

As far as stripped threads go, perhaps tap out to next larger size or heli-coil. Even better is take up oppsclunkthud on offer of a 20/20 carb.

Patrick, not to hijack, but if you still a 20/20 carb for sale and HKsprint does not want it, could you let me know? I just pulled the carb on my 66 sprint and it is totally locked up.

I would try soaking it in carburetor cleaner before giving up on it. Take off what you can to allow the dip to get in. I also have an ultrasonic cleaner from Harbor Freight that works wonders on what I can fit in it. The vibration helps loosen up rusted parts. Use simple green or similar degreaser in the ultrasonic.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the responses - really useful. It's great to be able to tap into such a wealth of experience!
The more I look at this carb, the more I realise that previous maintenance must have largely featured a hammer...
So the offer of a replacement looks very appealing. I'll message separately to discuss details (thanks oopsclunkthud).
The hole that I now know as the idle jet (thanks poidog) appeared to be blocked by a toothpick, some of which I managed to pick out. God knows how much is lurking within...
But as this engine hasn't run for circa 20 years (maybe that's why...), I'm sure there will be plenty more surprises as I work through it.
Great to be part of this forum!

Have just noticed that mineís a 20/15D...
Iím guessing the 20/15 is size related (excuse ignorance).
Will a 20/20 work?
And any idea what the D means?
What would be stock on a 74 Sprint V? So much has been changed on this bike that itís a mystery tour...
Also, are SPACO usable? I can pick one up here (South China) for $40... They have 20/20D and 24/24D...

The New Zealand VBC1M, 150 Super used a 20/15D, & it seems most other places used 20/17, so there is a chance the one on yours was the original supply.

I guess they had to use up the old stock somewhere

Spaco makes the carb to Dell'orto specs. Go with the 20/20, a nice step up from the 20/15. Remember to jet properly and that the threads on the mixture screw is finer . So instead of 1 1/2 turns out, go with 2 1/2.

Usually, I would not give 2 cents for an India part but I did buy a carburetor from India for my 1963 Allstate. I ordered on eBay a Spaco 20/20D carburetor non autolube for $40. The Spaco carburetor is made from licensed molds from DelPotro. My carburetor was new and just needed to be re-jetted. In addition, the carburetor arrived just four days after I placed the order. Shipping was free. I installed it in 2016 and it has been working great since.

The manufacturer's name is on the Float Bowl housing - you can see it in the photos above if you zoom in. Both Dellorto and Spaco are featured!

Here are some photos of the new Spaco SI 20/20D carburetor I bought for my restored 150 cc 1963 Allstate. As I mentioned before, I got this carburetor from India on eBay for $40 and received it in just four days. The fitment was perfect and it has been performing great for the past three years. My brother also ordered one for his restored 1965 VBB and his carburetor has been working great as well. Both carburetors were the non-autolube type.

Jetting will have to be altered based on your engine setup.
