I understand your thinking. I suppose ugly people have no media value. That's me screwed then.

I'm guessing a recent tragic event has prompted your post.

Yeah, it just made me realise that the most attractive person on that plane seems to represent the biggest loss.

Seems a bit shallow.

In the case of the Ethiopian Airlines plane crash I haven't seen any victim pictures. Just the crash site and diagrams and that is through CNN, BBC and The Toronto Star . Mind you I'm not saying they don't do that but in a twisted way I sort of understand it. Let's face it we are conditioned to feel more empathy and be drawn more to attractive people so they run with it in the press. The press is a for profit business and they will go with what brings more readership/viewership/web views.

Am I saying it's right or the correct thing to do? Hell no so please do not take what I am saying that way. It's just a theory I have heard about and kind of have to agree with.

Naw, man, yer logic's all off; what it really means is only hot people die in transportation accidents.

Figuring that out is, in fact, what got me back into motorcycles.

It just says something about us and the press that they would choose to show the picture of a very attractive victim over that of someone ....shall we say average.

Being attractive seems to give your loss somehow a higher value.

It's kind of sad.

Just sayin.

Whoo boy, tdrake, that certainly puts it all in perspective.

I was gonna complain that the storage pod I had delivered last week is still empty, because the snow has precluded me from emptying my house in preparation of my move.... but then I should be thankful I have a warm house to live in.

I used to say all the time... that line from Young Frankenstein.... when Dr Frankenstein and Igor are digging up the body in the graveyard and Gene Wilder exclaims "What could be worse than this, digging up a body in the middle of the night?" and Igor (Marty Feldman) responds "It could be worse, it could be raining".

And Bitza... thanks for helping to put it all into focus.

MYSELF!!!

I worked a bit late, helping a customer and updating a report. Hadn't taken my Anxiety/Depression meds in the morning. So I felt overly "rushed". Did't really speed, but lane split a lot. Took what is normally an unused "back route" home.

There's a spot where there are two stop signs a little more than a city block form each other. Well, on the second one I "Totally Paused". And the lovely police officer (who also rides but was in the SUV that I DIDN'T SEE) pulled me over. He said because I didn't stop. I didn't really turn my head to truly check for on coming traffic (There wasn't any) and as a fellow rider, he's ticketing me for not stopping for MY safety.

Yeah, I'm mad at myself!!! He was right. I didn't slow down enough to even qualify as a "California Stop". I didn't really look hard at the potential cross traffic. I would've seen him if I scanned well.

When he was writing me up, the memory of my Motorcycle Safety Course instructor reminding us to relax. When you are late, you are late. Do whatever you've got to do to stay focused and not make dumb mistakes because you're feeling "rushed" Haunted me...

So yeah, remember if you are late, you're late and make sure to still be safe.

Flooding
We've had plenty of snow, yesterday around 60 degrees with rapid melting. Our local, usually small river is at it's banks, with ice chunks bunched up by the bridges, making the threat of flooding more acute. I think we've had a good hundred people evacuated as of yesterday. My wife took an hour to get our daughter home as either streets were closed, or flooded enough to slow traffic to a crawl.

On top of that, my sump pump decided to crap out...well, didn't actually die, just slowed pumping. Adding to the problem we've had a pond outside the front of our building, that on a slab, with water seeping into the room I use most for work. So yesterday started with vacuuming up water from the carpet, then after I was relaxing at home, getting a call about the basement with 5 inches of water in it. It's fun enough, but exploring a flooded basement with crutches and a boot in a bag just adds to the enjoyment. An hour or two of time I'd have gladly spent otherwise.

Good news is we just need to dry out now...cooler weather without rain or snow for at least a week, which should get everybody settled...for now. Not sure how people are faring in the western part of the state....more prone to flooding, and a ton more snow. Parts got blasted last fall with huge rainfalls already.

Jump Bike's and E-Scooters. Okay not them specifically BUT the lack of helmet laws and how people are using them. Disregarding traffic laws and annoying me.

Here's the thing, in California youths under 18 can get stopped and ticketed up to 25 dollars for not wearing a helmet.

As an M classed rider, I could also get a ticket for not wearing a helmet ( i RARELY ride without a helmet!)

Believe me I KNOW my local law enforcement have better things to do than ticket people riding these BUT they are motorized and I think they should have helmet laws associated with their use. JUMP is actually slowing the E scooters down from 15mph to 12mph in an effort to curb accidents and injuries.

Sadly, Bill introduction deadline has already passed in our State Capitol. So I can't call my local representative and recommend it.

Stepping off soap box now and walking away...

Looks like I'm ankel buddies with fledermaus, although it looks like he is recovering well. I fell off a scaffold and injured both feet. The right not so bad. Just a bruise to the heel area but the left has a broken bone and I'm off to see the orthopedist tomorrow. Although the right isn't as bad, it is sore enough that I can't walk, even with crutches or a walker and I have had to crawl to the bathroom since Friday, when it happened. My knees have had about enough and so have I.

I am also going to miss at least a week of work and I don't have sick leave.

Shit. Doesn't sound too good. BTW, I'm a month or so in, 9 days to follow up, and hopefully good to ditch the mobility devices. It's been a bear. Do you know what bone is broken? Hope things go well with the orthopedist.

BTW, I'm a huge fan of the kneeling scooter. Crutches are a PITA, and with a bit of a beat up neck I pay the price of too much time on them. Still good for stairs and close spaces though. The scooter has been a godsend....I use one at work and have one at home too. You can toe off with it, so don't need to press on the heel. It's not bad for stationary positioning either.

My disability insurance wouldn't kick in until 60 days. I've needed to work too, fortunately the ortho didn't stop me from that (my wife kept insisting I shouldn't be, I kept reminding her that that's not what the ortho said. ).

PM me if you need a shoulder to cry on or a bit of what little wisdom I've garnered from this.

+1 Sorry that happened to you Matt. I also had an episode that my knee completely gave out and I thought I had broken it. But it was only a pulled muscle, Lucky me! Rest and put your feet up. Good luck at the doctor.

So, here's todays update. Better but still not great. Yes, I got some knee pads and they help a lot. I also have a small rolling stool that I can push myself around the house on with my not so bad foot. I even moved around on a walker a little today but I think it might be another day or two before that or crutches are really a practical option. I definitely going to look into one of those knee scooters. I think I'll be ready for that in a few days. There is a place in town that rents medical devices. You pay a fee and keep it as long as you need it.

My ankel was twisted and swollen. That's not the major problem. They took x-rays and at first said that it wasn't broken. They said there was a small bump on my heel bone but thought it was because of my age(57). Maybe they were thinking arthritis, I'm not sure. They decided to get a second opinion from a specialist who said it was a fracture. Oh, swell. I googled it. I know doctors hate that but we do it anyway. It said that the heel bone is very hard to break so I'm thinking it was just cracked. I should have asked to look at the x-ray, but I didn't. I don't go to the orthopedist until Thursday morning so I guess I'll know more then.

I got more, unrelated bad news today. My wife has Lupis and is on disability. At least she was. Since we got married last year and I have two cars and $6000. In my checking she is going to lose that. Things were already tight and now out combind income will be cut by a third. She will turn 65 in two and a half years and get on social security so that will help but it will be a strugge.

Spanish at home
So, as many of you know, my wife is a native Spanish speaker. English is the lingua franca at home for the most part... I keep trying to learn.....

This morning, I'm in the kitchen, my wife in the bathroom...part of our morning ritual is having a tea before breakfast.

I hear her slurp her tea....

Me: "How do you say "slurp" in Spanish?

Her: "I don't think we have a word. Why don't you google it?"

I finish what I'm doing for a minute, check for a translation...

Me: [being careful to roll my "r's" etc...] "Sorber"

Her: "I don't understand you..."

Me: "The word for "slurp!" You told me to look it up, no?"

Her: "Oh, I didn't know you were speaking Spanish."

Me; [eyeroll] "YOU JUST TOLD ME TO LOOK IT UP!"

Her: "Oh." "It's been too many years."

"Your pronunciation was great!"

I used to think my mates VFR400 sounded like a sewing machine. At least compared to my obnoxiously loud Guzzi.

Seat won’t latch
Spent most of the trying to install Piaggio rear crash bars on my wife’s 2018 GTS. Install Corbin seat not latching; space latch up with two washers, seat latches, yeah! Install the crash bars, easy install but the Corbin seat hits the two supports at the rear of the seat. Seat doesn’t latch. No problem space the seat mounted latch down with two washers, not latching. No problem add 2 more, not latching. Eventually add a total of 6 sets of washers on bottom of the Seat still won’t latch. Very frustrating for something so simple.

Especially on the beard.

I think my wife's sick of me blurting out "hair dye!" when we watch tv/films, but, yeah, it bugs the hell out of me, too, for either gender.
