Make sure you use the special 87% nitrogen air for winter conditions. Don't be fooled by regular old 78% nitrogen air. That stuff is hell on tires.

I've also heard that you should rebalance your wheels to account the shift in planets rotational axis during the cold season. While it doesn't coincide with the governments decision about when to change the clocks, its a convenient reminder. Anyone do that?

On the other hand, while they don't have blinker fluid, Modern Vespas actually do have a "muffler bearing"...

And don't forget to allow for Coriolis effects when turning. Depending in which hemisphere you reside in they will affect left and right turns differently.
Also, gravity decreases with altitude, so adjust tires and shocks as needed. Finally, allow for relativistic time dilation on long trips. |

Gear Adjustment
On the Vespa, it is really important to annually have the bull gear
adjusted so it does not jump the heifer gear. Holy Cow Bullwinkle J Moose Frost Bite Falls Minnesota |

Just to add to the mix
DO NOT forget that winter air addition means you need to counter steer in the OPPOSITE direction to summer. |

This is well documented effect as told in the Mr Tompkins books published in 1965 by George Gamow. The stories are very charming and informative. Gamow tried to educate the public on relativity and its effects on every day life by showing what happens if the speed of light is, say, 100 mph. One of his stories is about a traffic accident trial to determine who was at fault when one car hits another at a traffic light. Fascinating reading, well written and quite comprehendible. I read them years ago as a undergraduate. They are available on Amazon. Fantastic winter tips here!! Thanks for starting it Bitza. Perhaps your most informative post ever. I love it. Cheers. Miguel |
