I heard a couple of comments from people who thought that the Bonneville wasn't an ideal bike to tour the US on.

That's not true as it did an excellent job. It's a really capable bike.

Not going to trade my Scrambler in as I'm still in love, but just out of curiosity - was it a stock Bonneville?

Yes it was a standard Bonneville. Panniers and a screen were the only accessories.

A MV member let me borrow this bike and I think for now they should remain nameless.

All done now.

It's odd. I didn't have any issues with bad driving all the way across until I got to LA and within minutes 2 people tried to merge into my lane.

Later on that day it happened again.

I ended up at San Pedro but I cancelled a trip to ride back to the Marconi Motor Museum as I didn't want to return the 405.

Maybe I was just done with riding ?

Final
The Bonneville T120 is a really capable bike.

It eats the miles with ease, does at least 55 miles to the gallon and has a delightfully smooth engine which never felt stressed or hurried.

The gearbox is also a slick joy to use.

Even though the engine revs freely it has enough torque for it to filter easily through traffic but it's at it's really at its best banging in the miles on the freeway.

It's reserve tank is supposed to be about 25 miles but I managed to stretch this to 45 in the desert by tailgating trucks while being very gentle with the throttle.

Only after a 500 mile day I did start to ache a little but my limbs returned to normal after a short day ( 300 ) the day after.

It felt a little clumsy in West Virginia where the uneven rural road surface made the narrow front wheel bounce a little so I quickly abandoned that route and got back on the freeway but I'll also put this down to be being a little nervous.

I couldn't get a rhythm going with the bike on the first day so I was feeling my way with it.

I'd like to thank the owner once again for allowing me to ride it this distance.

The alternative isn't worth talking about.

Bill x

Yeah as we discussed LA drivers are very aggressive. Itís like playing a video game with only one life. Somehow Iíve become the road warrior here.

And Bill dog, when I rode the ownerís Bonneville to get to the shipping truck location....I noticed you didnít use the trip meter to know when to gas up.

Were you counting miles off the odo? Or using gps for that?

Trip meter is your friend!!!!!

It had a trip ?

I just counted 130 miles after I fueled up so I knew roughly when the light was going to come on but the day I misjudged it was the day when I changed into waterproofs as I saw a storm approaching so to avoiding having to top up when it was pouring down I used one of the auxiliary tanks to get me a few more miles.

As I was topping up the tank a motorist offered me the contents of his jerry can which I happily accepted but this didn't brim the tank so I decided to run it until the light came on just for shits and giggles.

Like a fool I sailed past the last gas station for a while just as the light came on so I then held my breath for many miles while the tank emptied itself.

It was my own fault for not stopping earlier rather so hands up, my mistake.

The mpg has actually improved as the engine's loosened off.

Oh as I headed toward the storm the road veered off to the right steering me well away from the lightening strikes which I was grateful for but I was now in full wet gear in 90 degrees. Rice and bag of sprung to mind.

So I was a little puzzled by the comments by the employees of a Triumph dealership and many other riders while I was travelling when they suggested that the T120 wasn't really the right bike to ride that distance.

I really didn't know what to say apart from what Bullshit.

Maybe if it was one of the 30 anonymous black Electra Glides that I counted they would have been more accepting but it seems not.

When I parked up the bike under the awning at the front of the Best Western I woke up to find it hemmed in by 4 ( all black ) Leccy Glides.

They must have had a deal going locally to offload a job lot because that's pretty much all I saw around that delightful town.

Narrow minded twats with no imagination.

yeah that's hogwash. a triumph Bonneville makes for a lovely tourer. I alter all my bikes to do what I want. I've toured on my Bonneville se 865.

I even road my Ducati Monster 821 to NorCal for the women's Sportbike rally. I destroyed the rear tire while I was at it....as in wore down the tread to metal..... but we traveled the distance nonetheless.

I'm really missing the freedom to just get on a bike and ride all day to the next place.

This kind of liberation is quite addictive and I'd like some more please and the further the better.

Even just having driven across Spain and the length of France it's still not enough.

I need more Dammit.

Oddly enough that picture was taken on one of the least enjoyable days riding.

West Virginia is so pretty but the roads could do with a little work.

The people were lovely though. Very interested in the bike and the journey,

Yep, Ed's well known to us UK Cub riders.

I've even used his name to try and blag my way in to an Adventure Bike meet on my C90.

Marshal: "You can't come in, mate. It's for adventure bikes"

Me: "A C90 is an adventure bike. Have you not heard of Ed March? Antonia Bollingbroke-Kent? Nathan Milward?"

Marshal: "No"

*Austin Vince waves to me from the inner sanctum*

Me: "Go and ask Austin Vince about them."

Marshal: "Who?"

* I shake the Marshal's hand*

Me: "I'll park outside."
