Pre emissions PX150 engine. The later Euro 2 and 3 ones were VLX2M. What year is the scooter, as this will help determine if it's the later EFL spec. (better gearbox)?

Should be an EFL. All the right bits and more material for porting than the late PX150 motors, if you plan on making it go faster. You should have electronic ignition, oil injection, and a 20/68 clutch/primary combo. Gearbox for those early EFLs is as per PX125E (late one = PX200 gearbox). It'll have the 6 spring clutch, which is not so good if you're looking to increase the power.

I have a VBX1T which is a Danmotor (Indonesian) 3 port 150 with autolube and electronic ignition from 1988. The model I have is a P150S Strada and it has 8" wheels. I'm wondering if this is the same engine with different gearing to suit the 8" wheels.

I've no experience with that particular engine, but yes, the gearing would be different for an 8" wheel. Assuming your friend's PX has it's factory engine, it will be an early PX150E EFL. There is a very slim chance that it is pre-EFL and was registered a few years late, but I doubt it.
