Howdy folks, I was lucky enough to be at the launch of the new GTS 300 HPE this week. Here's my review for ScooterLab...

That is a great write-up. Thanks for publishing it here.

At last Piaggio have designed a new scooter. For the last decade and more they have just thrown old bits together, using the same cylinder head, exhaust, air filter etc on the 125, 250 and 300. The only new design was the camshaft that came out a couple of years ago, and the sidestand that came out last year. OK, ABS and ASR too.

Now here we have a new engine that has been designed as a whole, everything re-worked for this new Vespa, and they seem to have done a wonderful job of it.

According to Zirri it doesn't have the performance of an older model with a Malossi V4 cylinder and head, but it has certainly narrowed the gap. And I like the "necktie" horn cover.

Great review. My main question is how long do we have to wait for it in the US and is it worth waiting for?

I believe you guys did a report a while back on how many GTS's were getting stolen a week because of the crappy security. Did you look to see if they've improved the security at all?

Sure would love to trade in my 2012 for a new 300. They look great!

Thanks for the link to your review.

I'm wondering if we will get the HPE models here this year.

Sydney. We scoot all the year around.

But I'm told the HPE models won't get here this year.

This article from Rideapart says that the GTS hpe is hitting the market now:

https://www.rideapart.com/articles/304888/most-powerful-vespa-gts-launch/

It is vague on which market, I hope it means the US.

Seems like they are quite chuffed with it

When the time comes for me to replace my 2009 GTS, I'll likely replace it with another large frame Vespa. Perhaps I'll find a low mile HPE someday in the future.

The HPE will be 2020 models in the US, with a couple colors arriving in March. That usually means at the end of the month in Vespa speak, so like March 30 we get invoiced, few days shipping to the dealer.

March
GTS 300 HPE ABS VERDE MY20
GTS 300 HPE ABS BLU ENERGIA MY20
GTS 300 HPE ABS GRIGIO DOLOMITI MY20

April
GTS SUPER 300 HPE ABS BIANCO MY20
GTS SUPER 300 HPE ABS NERO LUCIDO MY20
GTS SUPER 300 HPE ABS ROSSO MY20
GTS SUPER 300 HPE ABS GIALLO MY20
GTS SUP.SP. 300 HPE BLU VIVACE MY20
GTS SUP.SP.300 HPE GRIGIO TIT. MY20
GTS TOURING 300 HPE ABS VERDE BOSCO MY20

May
VESPA GTS SUPERTECH 300 HPE GRIG.M. MY20

June
GTS 300 HPE ABS YACHT CLUB MY20
GTV 300 HPE SEI GIORNI ABS GRIGIO OPACO MY20
GTS SUPER 300 HPE ABS NOTTE MY20

Looks like they all went up $150 over the 2019 MSRP

Very good news then. I was ready to buy a while back till at EICMA showed the new gts300 version and so I put the whole thing on hold. I will wait a bit, and get the hpe. Unless they give a big discount on the current ones. But I doubt it, dealers in Bay Area area seem to prefer keeping the stuff unsold.

Substantial discounts available on the outgoing models here in the U.K. (£3999) seems almost rude not to buy one at that price!

There is one on display at the Toronto Motorcycle Show right now (the yellow one). It's strange to see a Menu button on a Vespa.

Cheers,
Bob

Ah, this article doesn't attribute Vespa thefts to "crappy security". It is about the theft of popular scooter models in the London area. The lead off is about a Lambretta theft!

The subtitle of the report is "30 Vespas stolen in one week". The article might not attribute the thefts to "crappy security" but this is the reason they are a magnet for bike thieves. Apparently it only takes a couple of minutes to ride a GTS away as if it were your own. I'm quite certain that scooterlab are aware of this but I was quite curious why they didn't make any mention of whether the issue has been addressed.
