I notice that my GTS 250 is making what I would call a rapping sound. I tried to record it and it is attached. What is it and is it something to be concerned about?

Sorry about the zip file but that was only way to attach a sound file as mp3 is not an allowed extension.

Thanks to all in advance.

Does it go away when you rev it up or get worse?

It sounds like it gets faster revving the motor. I have my suspicions but want to hear other opinions.

Could be the belt slapping. Can you tell if it's coming from the transmission case, the engine, or the exhaust? How does the sound change when you rev the engine beyond idle?

Does it sound anything like this?

The comments on youtube mention the belt, or a plate in the clutch, or that it's a normal sound, but there's no conclusion.

yes, kinda like that. I have a friend that has a mechanics stethoscope so may get that this week to see if I can isolate in the belt area or valves.

This is a new belt so is this common?

As long as you are not near ANY move parts, a long extension works good as a mechanics stethoscope.
If you are near moving parts use a piece of garden hose.
