Hi there people.

Just found this forum after googling an indicator problem ive got
on my et4.

For the last couple of months I've been restoring a modern Vespa. ET4 125 leader.
After sorting the engine and electrics, and finally putting the whole thing back together. I've found a problem. Bit of a strange 1.

Without the engine running the indicators function correctly . With the engine running, after about 20s the indicators stop working. Switch the engine off. They start working again. Very strange.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Alex.

Does anything else electric stop functioning at the same time? What does the voltage at the battery look like with engine off and with it on?

Is this a Leader engine (later) model or the earlier pre-Leader? You can tell by whether you have an oil dip-stick (Leader) or an oil level viewing glass (pre-Leader). There's also two versions of the pre-Leader - one with a 5-pin regulator and one with an 8-pin regulator.

Only the 5-pin regulator pre-Leader ET4 had a separate indicator relay. I doubt that this is your model.

The pre-Leader models with the 8-pin regulator were prone to the indicators not working while everything else was fine - if this is the case then just add a two-pin turn signal relay instead of the feed from the regulator. However, do check your voltages with the engine running to ensure the regulator is working fine on both AC and DC.

If it's a Leader engine, then the indicators are fed from the CDI/immobiliser unit. Again, if this has stopped working properly, just add a two-pin signal relay, but be prepared for other problems as the unit warms right up. It might be fine though...

If adding a relay, ensure it's for motorcycle use, as car ones expect a higher wattage load and will blink too fast as if a bulb was blown.

Most m/c dealers will stock a suitable two-pin relay, or search and buy online.

Thanks for the replyies guys.

Berto. All of the other electrics are working correctly. Battery volts with the engine off is 12.2v, engine running 17.4v.

It is the leader model.
A friend mentioned it could be an earthing problems. Does anyone know where the earthing points are. The Haynes manual doesn't detail them.

Cheers

Based on my experience with two GTS 250's, it sounds like your voltage regulator is shot. 17 volts is way too high. The voltage regulator should limit the voltage to less than 15 volts. This high voltage on the battery will lead to overcharging which will damage the battery as well as some electronics may not be able to handle voltage that high.

Yes, your regulator is buggered. Replace it ASAP, as the high voltage will damage the battery, and might damage other electronics - like the indicator circuits...
