Hi! New forum member here with an MP3 500 -16.

When I started it up for the first time this season I noticed that the ASR warning light stayed on. At first it flashed together with the ABS light in their diagnostics phase. But when the ABS light turned off, the ASR stayed lit.
I have checked the tire pressure and it's like the manual says it should be, 2.0 in the front and 2.4 in the back. I tried to do the ASR recalibration, but it seems like it's not possible to enter the calibration state when the warning is lit.

Any ideas?

One other thing that may or may not be related is that the battery is possibly bad. I have recharged it so it should be fully charged, however the voltage shows ~10V once I have attached it to the bike. The charger claims that it's fully charged, but evidently it's not. The bike starts just barely. I guess this could mean that either the battery or the charger is faulty. Once the bike is started it shows ~14.5V, so the on board charging system seems ok.
Could a low voltage cause problems with the ASR? I'm thinking that it shouldn't be related since the ABS is not affected, but I'm far from an expert.

Question: Did the lights change any after riding the bike?

No change. It stayed lit.

I called a shop and they said it could be sensitive to battery problems, so I'll get a better charger and test the battery some more.

Sounds like a battery with a bad cell.

If the ASR is Off the light will stay ON no?

Are you sure it's not because you switched off the ASR that the light stay ON?

You need a battery. 10 volts after charging, it is bad.

Unfortunately yes, I'm sure I didn't switch it off. The ASR button does nothing when pressed. Also, the ASR is supposed to turn on everytime when the engine is started. You have to explicitly turn it off everytime if you want it off. At least that's what I understand from reading the owners manual.

Anyway, my current bet is that the battery was too discharged, and that the cheap battery charger I used couldn't handle that. I have ordered a better one (CTEK MXS 5.0 Test & Charge) which might be able to fix it. I'll hopefully get it this week. And if that doesn't work I guess it's time for a new battery.

It's not your battery charger, it is your battery.
It would charge with a 0.25 amp charger, it would just take longer.
It is as charged as it is going to get.

I got the new charger and charged the battery with it. Checking with a voltmeter after charging shows ~12.5V. That's ok right?

However, after putting the battery back in the bike, when I turn on the ignition, the bike shows ~9.6V

Would you still say it's the battery that's faulty, or would it be something wrong in the bike?

Absolutely, definitely, conclusively the battery. Just get a new one - and don't forget to fully charge it before first use!

Well, imagine that, you were right, who would have thought
I bought a new battery and it works fine now. It starts fine, and the ASR light turns off like it should!

Still was worth a try with the new charger though, since I needed one anyway. Can't keep borrowing my friends charger forever

Thanks!
