Went to kickstart my VBB this morning and when I kick down it returns back very strongly and quite harshly.

Any ideas? seems to stop the bike from starting too

when did you last check the internal buffer rubbers?

Kick back
Assuming your ignition timing is where it should be, all engines will have kick back. Those engines with good compression will have a bit more. Worn out engines “low compression “ will have very little kick back.

Perhaps fuel seeped past your carb’s float needle overnight and your cylinder has a bunch of excess fuel in it? If so, remove the spark plug, kick it over a few times to clear out the fuel, reinstall the plug, then try starting it again.

It does sound like timing, but is that something that can slip on a VBB? Is the points adjustment plate loose?

I had an MG I had to re-time frequently, because the distributor clamp was badly designed and the distributor could slowly rotate out of time.

Hi There. I have a bike with this symptom and haven’t quite figured it out yet. One posts found symptom went away by replacing stator. Worth a try. I got new stator & unfortunately problem persists.

I have now perfected the art of lifting my foot fast after I quick so I don’t get whacked

are we talking kick-back as in forceful spring return - or backfire when the thing starts??

a dodgy stator is unlikely to have any bearing on the return of the kickstart so i personally would discount that idea.

It seems to me that you may need to examine the engine internals and ascertain if you have the return spring installed correctly or has it jumped from its original seeting location

It has been working fine and then suddenly after a ride the other day it started doing it, it's not every time more like 1 out of 5 kicks.

I have thought this before tbh, bike has not been running great. Will replace next time I get a chance just as a precaution and they are cheap to buy.

Hi, can you elaborate why the consensus seems to be around the stator plate and associated periphery? I only use the electronic ignition and can only see this to be a mechanical issue.

could someone please enlighten me??

He has a points ignition stator. Very simple system and with specific problems over time. When the kickstart kicks back it’s usually ignition related because the spark “hits” at the wrong time. The usual culprit is the condenser, if the points are in good shape...

Thankyou - i now feel enlightened. I can now see how this would occur.
