Best way to tell is to open the head, take off the cylinder, and count the ports. Two ports are older Sprints and 3 ports are late Sprint Veloce. The look of the exhaust that has a bolt that goes through the swingarm is an indication it maybe a 3 port Veloce.

There's a lot of work to do. Floor is toast and needs replacement. The good thing is that I bought it so cheap that even if I have the frame completely overhauled, I'll still be well in budget. I allready have the quote for the blasting, repare, tinning and new color.

I say Sprint Veloce, as it doesn't look like the sort of scooter that would have had a headset change. It needs a lot of TLC, but it has all it's factory correct bits, apart from those wheels.

Take a look at the crankshaft taper. Hopefully it's P style and not the old narrow taper. That would mean a better choice of aftermarket cranks if you decide to upgrade it. Three ports in the casing means you can use any of the 177/187 kits without having to cut the third port. The standard 150 on 10" wheels is a bit slow, even with a go faster name like Veloce

[edit] not sure about the rear light. Is the lens just missing?

Definitely looks like a legit Euro Spec Sprint

If it's a Veloce, you can get 20HP pretty easily if you choose to go that route. Mine is a US Spec Sprint V, and it's definitely my favorite bike, both to ride and to look at.

Yes it's just the lens missing. You need one like a Rally 200. Your exhaust bolt goes all the way through the swing arm and into a cage nut on the other exhaust flange, so should be the three port motor. The two port older Sprint and Super engines just had a threaded hole on the tailpipe side to mount the exhaust.

Paint is original, but the floor is dead. But again, for 1500 eur i have a new floor, a completely restored and painted frame and bodywork

Nice Scoot - I would do the V oodoo plate job to the floor and be riding that thing as soon as possible. I see a lot of fun times ahead and there is always time to restore it down the road. Good luck with it.

But it's not rideable at the moment. Has been standing for 20 years, engine is seized. It needs a complete overhaul.
But I still got my VBB200 to ride!

Legend has it that on 3 port cases the exhaust held on by a bolt that goes through the swing-arm, while on 2 port cases the bolt screws into the case

Most of it is in this thread.

But short form is:
Polini 177, now with a Grand Sport piston (1mm rings)
60mm cut crank*
24/24 si carb
Venturi intake
SIP Sport (variable timing) ignition

A LOT of dremel work to
- port & match carb->airbox->case
- open the intake port
- open the piston & cylinder ports, match everything
- re-shape the exhaust port

Port timings of 124/170

Lot of good advice in there from Jack221, too.

* I'll pay the premium for the "finely balanced" version of the crank next time.

^^^Not this green, but darker? This is a stock green for this period of Sprints. Mine is also Euro version w/ big headlight and I love my color too. Best of the largeframes other than Rallys IMO. I'd take a Veloce over an SS180 any day to keep & ride if that were a condition. SS 180 worth a LOT more & GS !60 too, but those fussy motors & spendy parts, often hard to find, I guess don't appeal to me.

The factory offered a darker green on mid 70's Primaveras ... Verde 590 ... almost British Racing Green. I think it'd look great on a Sprint.

It's at home!

I've remove the left cowl and cleaned up the VIN to double check.
It might be 0183*** instead of 0133*** which would be more logic, since that points to a '74 Sprint Veloce.

Nice!

Guys, and girls:
Anybody knows of an alternative for scooterhelp?
Scooterhelp is down, and I would like to know build year of my engine to see narrow down the date range of my vin.
As I see it now, it could be from '69 or '74.
Or anybody who knows a distinctive difference between a sprint v from these two years?

Thanks!!

Hi all,

I might not have been completely clear.

So.. Since there is no paperwork with the scooter, the dealer is going to ask Piaggio for new paperwork.
The problem is that the VIN is hardly readable, especially the 3th figure (after 01).
It might be a 0, a 3, an 8 or a 5.

0 and 3 are not logical, since those are VIN's of a Sprint (non-Veloce) of '69.
Since it has a round headlight and no chromes or holes for chromes on the cowls and fender, it should be a Veloce.

5 is a Sprint Veloce from '69
8 is a Sprint Veloce from '74

So.. I think it's a 5.
Since Sprint Veloces were only available in Silver in '69, and I think this one was not resprayed, it could be a '69.

The problem is that they were also sprayed in Silver in the following years...

Another twist of the mind:

If I put the frame number and the engine number below each other I get:

Supposing the 3th number is a 5:

01 53 *** for the frame
02 51 *** for the engine

The others would be:
01 83 ***
01 03 ***

That seems like another range to me.
Anyone knows if the engines started with a 2?

I'm a little lost.
If I provide a wrong number to Piaggio, and they provide the paperwork for it and when I try to register it it appears to exist allready, I'll have a mayor issue...

Any ideas?

I think (but don't know for sure) that the square font and straight across nature of the vespa badge on the front is a 70's feature. A '69 would probably have had a curly 'script' font, and the badge would have been slanted.

You are right, but they changed this later on. In 1975.
And 1975 have VIN that starts with 02, so that's excluded. Now, they could have changed the badges off course.

Thanks for helping me think

Are you sure? Just Google search for Vespa Sprint Veloce 1974 (or other models, same year) and you will see the square font. A search for 1969 Vespas will show the script font. Of course the badge could have been changed but I think it's unlikely.

I've been where you are and I just found the old thread. Mr Hodge gets things sorted nicely and I believe we are brothers, the serial #'s should tell us who's the older brother. But it's the 'same' bike and welcome to the family, bro!

Until when did Vespas came with script badges?

I like that blue & bet she's a well preserved young 75... Got her number maybe, so I can verify?

I read it on wikipedia, but now find a lot of different stories.
