She asked me to go to a concert with her (Boy George-SERIOUSLY good live!) and my truck was in the shop, my wife (yes, I had permission) had the Can-Am and I had very good tickets-so I took the Burgman as thats all I had. Known this women for a long time, and I figured she would be alright on the scooter-but I quickly found out otherwise! I took all back streets going slow, went wide around all the turns and kept it smooth as possible. She still dug claw marks in my side! But, the concert was really fun and we survived going back afterwards. I've taken a few ladies out on the Can-Am Spyder with no issues.

My question is. How do you take a girl on a date? I would not feel safe with a girl riding on my back since I will be brand new to scooters.
Donít let your confidence exceed your ability.

Insist on protective gear.

And, have fun.

You need to explain in simple words how they should lean with the bike and not fight the handling. I took a friend out on my Burgman and she made riding SO HARD! Fought the turns, wanted to put her feet down and left claw marks on my sides! If your serious abut this scooter date thing buy a Grip-N-Ride waist belt.

Actual claw marks, oh my! Maybe she liked you... or you're a terrible driver?

The question nobody asked...

Who was your wife's pillion on the Can-Am Spyder and where did they go?

One thing no one has mentioned here (probably because you're all guys,) is that while many women will find a scooter fun and be glad to hop on the back of one, there are also many that may not appreciate being handed a helmet if they just did something nice with their hair. Don't just show up - ask if she minds and remind her she'll have to wear a helmet. This will allow her to plan her hair and outfit accordingly.

Good point! Back in my Mod/scooterboy dating days where lots of us were on scooters the girls would often have hats. Of course this was in Montreal where for a lot of the year toques (winter hats) were needed so the girls were used to having to plan their hair for putting a hat/helmet on.

For a female perspective...

I obviously have a license and a scooter so this wouldn't be a question but even being s scooter person... I would want to have a conversation about it before being picked up

Option to say no
Option to say yes but please tell me what to wear
Option to ask all questions
Time to get over maybe initial fear and back into excitement/anticipation zone again before having to throw a leg over

Probably this date has happened already, but if not, good luck.

And +1 on ditching the financial history

She said to me: "Why are you braking so abrupt?" and I: "I have to warm up the brakes for safety" ...
After a while he understood why, he punched me in the head (the helmet was not yet mandatory) and laughingly told me there was no need; and then I understood ... but must I give instructions? If you wanted to bring (woo) a girl you had to have a two-wheeled vehicle (in Italy it was necessary years ago then today everything has changed) and then to the car whose license we take at 18 years.
I was poor (that's right, mine was a simple family and we didn't have much but I immediately learned what it meant to sacrifice to get things) and went to a scrap yard and bought the MV Agusta 125 (which I still have today) all rusty; I was 16 years old and already I was passionate about mechanics. I restored it all by myself ... engine and body and it still go me today. It was the year 1976, good times.

Definitely possible, but I wouldn't recommend it on a first date. First off you're just banking on your spare helmet fitting (although that's quite likely if you're male and they're female just down to average gender head size, might be a bit loose on her though) but also some people just don't take well to it. I have a platonic female friend who leans the wrong way on corners and is generally freaked out by the lack of control so I have to ride real slow when she's on board and it feels quite unstable, but my girlfriend is such a natural it feels like she's doing half the steering for me. She and I ride most of wherever we're going, since it's my primary form of transportation.

Also depending on how safety conscious you are they probably don't have adequate protective clothing and you'll have to have been together a while before asking them to buy some/buying some for them doesn't seem like a weird ask!

FWIW Houston Scooter Batallion has its monthly ride on Sunday. Stop by before it starts and ask questions in person. Location is usually Eight Rows Flint in the Heights but check their Facebook post or with Scootersmith for starting location.

Me (19), SoCal wife (eighteen) - our first vehicle was a small Honda bike.
She rode all over New England with me. Dinner dates to nice restaurants, etc. Both wore Bells for safety -- but too often she was in short shorts, or nice short coulottes (for dinner....which looked like a miniskirt . ...and got alot of attention in traffic!) This was 1967...so not unusual attire for the times.
How I loved the view up those coulottes in my mirrors! !
Very distracting....
Good good times.

Still looking for a date? Just kidding. It has been a while since I dated (47th anniversary coming up in a few days). But, as I remember: you can make anything work if you're determined.

I've seen couples on scooters at night in town a number of times in which I would say to myself, "They're on a date."

The best I ever managed to capture in a photograph was in Denver. They seemed dressed for a date.
