I've been on the lookout for another Vespa and I found this 1964 GL. I've offered the gentleman $2000 and he countered with $2200. I wanted to see what folks on Not-So-Modern think of this scooter. It runs, and has a title, but it's been repainted.

Give us some more info....

Does it run and ride?

Does it have and paperwork (like a title)?

When was it last run or ridden regularly? When was it last registered?

From here, it looks pretty nice for a 55 year old machine. It doesn't look like it was stored outside.

Iíve been told the scooter has a clean title and that it runs. I will go to see it tomorrow, with a trailer.
Hey Chandlerman, are you busy tomorrow? I think this scooter is in your neighborhood.

I guess the only thing I would add is... is that an original engine? It certainly looks unmolested.... Or at least correct for the model.... I know determining an engine's originality is difficult without matching numbers on engine and frames....

I know some older engines are less desirable than others, but I know nothing of that.

Not knowing enough about this model, yet I would consider this. If the trap headset is original, that is the kind of scoot I would spend more money than otherwise comfortable on.

I just went to the bank and on schedule to go see the GL tomorrow morning. Getting ready to dig the trailer out.

Just kidding, 2k for a GL seems fair. So, What's the worse that could happen? If it's all there, if you don't like it after awhile of owning it, you could sell for probably a wee bit more. Or at least break even.

Personally, the GL is one of my favorite Vespas. Great styling, and from what Iíve been told, very reliable and a great ride from people who have owned one. If itís legit - meaning it has its original motor, and the body is clean (despite the repaint), Iíd say do it.

I donít know if the guy was a scammer or just a jerk, but I drove 30 miles with my old trailer to buy the G.L. and he wasnít home. I even got there 15 minutes early. He wouldnít answer my texts. So I left and havenít heard from since.

...or someone offered him more money for it, is what i'm betting. But at least he should be decent enough to let you know.

It's on ebay currently and has been -- on and off -- several times before.

Aw man... I'm pissed now, and I wasn't even shopping for this scoot.....

Question for you....

Did he give you any info on the scoot, like if it runs, when it was last ridden regularly, and details on the parts/maintenance/upgrades?

Sorry you had to take a tour of cold Illinois with an empty trailer attached to your car.

He said he rode it around the leafy suburb of Evanston during the summer and that he was a film director.

Did you talk to him verbally over the phone, or via email or text?

I think that was probably a red flag right there, but live and learn, I guess. Two hours of my time and some gas, but no money lost.
