I bought an engine and having taken it apart I'm told the layshaft is correct for the EFL casings (84-97), but the gears and matching gear cluster are from a later engine.

It is ok to use these in the EFL casing? Or do I have to obtain some period correct gears & cluster?

Thanks

Somebody might correct me here, but I was pretty sure that EFL were the last ones used. Measure them against this below (I believe Lusso and EFL basically mean the same thing when it comes to gears).

Also check your drive shaft. If it has circlips at either end of the gear stack, then it's the later EFL type.

and remember, an EFL transmission can be used in the older non-EFL cases and vice-versa, a non-EFL transmission can be used in an EFL case. But what you can't do is mix and match the individual ELF and non-EFL transmission components with each other in the engine cases.

Doing some work on this myself currently...
Last two pages have some images and explanation that may be helpful - as I was untangling it myself.

Also - here is an exploded view that shows the components.

If you want to post some pics of your components - we could probably help you readily identify.
Good luck with your project!

If I'm using EFL gears and cluster in a PX mk 1 engine do I need an early or EFL wheel layshaft?

The simple way to look at it is that an EFL gearbox must has all EFL parts from layshaft, gear changer, gears, and etc. An early gearbox has all early parts from layshaft, gear changer, gears, and etc.

You need a EFL layshaft.
