![]() My area's walmart and tarjay have completely sold out of hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes. Many of yous not in coastal cities probably can't relate, but the fear is real. Local restaurants have started scanning patrons for high fever (albeit completely pointless) and Stanford docs have had to start youtube channels to prevent mass hysteria.
tl;dr This is not funny. |

If it gets really bad i will have to start sanitizing with cheap local rum. Now the funny bit is the level of paranoia they some will descend into, if descend is the right expression. Although I suppose if one turns to hand sanitizer under certain conditions the way one would wear a seat belt in a car or a crash helmet when riding, then that is understandable. The worst will be the draconian measures like limiting movement of people which will effect day to day life and livelihoods of the individual. PS. I can't abide those stupid zombie movies. |

![]() As someone who survived a MRSA infection that went down to the bones of my spine...don’t rely on hand sanitizer without regular soap-and-water washing. It’s not meant to be a standalone thing, even though people use it as such. It isn’t magic. That’s a part of the problem. Treat it as the intermittent stopgap that it was designed to be and couple it with actual washing.

![]() This afternoon I was in a meeting organising a large public event for early March. Wonder how that’s going to go.
Sanitisers are maybe better than nothing, not as good as soap and water. Maybe worse than nothing if you think your hands are clean afterwards. https://arstechnica.com/science/2020/01/purells-unproven-disease-fighting-claims-get-sanitized-after-fda-warning/ |

![]() The first case in Finland was just diagnosed. A turist flying from Wuhan, China to Rovaniemi, Finland. The patient is a normal, healthy person, now just needs to heal in an isolated patient care area in the hospital before being allowed to continue the trip.
Yeah, the face mask does not help a healthy person and is a really poor solution for the sick too. Corona virus is of a type, quite typical actually for a virus, that does not mind about desinfection products. So proper hand washing with a normal soap is the best way to keep the viruses off your hands. Viruses can't 'fly' , so they'll get to you only through some other media. Handshaking, sneeze drops, various surfaces that are touched frequently. |

![]() London was identified as the European city most at risk but there are no cases yet. With 2 million users of the tube per day it could spread pretty quickly.

![]() I'm sitting on my bike typing this before heading up to my office. I'm one block or so from one of the biggest Chinatowns in NA and live about a 10 minute walk from it. I'm not worried at all and I don't get a sense of panic with others I interact with. Yeah we've got the hype here too and confirmed cases but I'm not worried about it. I made it through the SARS panic and will this. The press loves a good story.

Right now that i had retired, but i wonder ... and the goods that travel all over the world and particularly those that arrive from China (including motorcycles) will not be dangerous? |

![]() If you are freaking out about corona virus but you didn't get a flu shot, you've got it backwards. Corona virus has killed 132 people so far and all in China with 6000 world wide. Most of the deaths, like with the annual flu, were elderly or people with complicating health problems.
By comparison this year's flu season has killed 8,200 people with 15 million cases and that is just in the US. I'm not saying Corona does not warrant a strong public-health response but a lot of deaths could be prevented since many people that get the annual flu did not get a flu shot.

![]() I've been getting the flu vaccine every year for twenty years ... and two years ago I got the vaccine for pneumonia, in Italy for people with congenital pathologies (me) and above 60 years of age the vaccines are administered free.

![]() The thing that scares me is the number of people who have recovered is about the same as the number who have died. Currently both just over 200.

![]() While we’re recommending movies and since the flu was mentioned...I’m quite fond of the tv show ReGenesis. Canadian production, 4 seasons that started in 2004. There’s a season-long story arc involving the Spanish Flu. It’s one of my favorites.

![]() First it was AIDS that was going to kill everyone. Then it was necrotizing fasciitis. Them MRSA. Now this.
BTW, this years flu vaccine started out at 60% effectiveness. It’s now 20%. A family member, RN, her hospital requires all to get the flu shot every year. This year, her and her entire department contracted the flu.

![]() I spent a good part of my late career at Penn State working with the Food Science Department on sanitation education. Handwashing is a big deal and one of the keystone elements of food safety and the reduction of disease transmission.
One thing I learned from the research they did was that they discouraged frequent use of hand sanitizers. It is not as effective as soap and water for a wide range of reasons I won't go into here. Good handwashing takes time. The sanitizer industry makes people think a squirt and wipe will do the trick. It doesn't. If you want details this flyer on handwashing will provide some.file:///Users/stevewilliams/Downloads/handwashing-your-best-defense-against-illness.pdf What's this have to do with riding a Vespa? I guess if I'm sick or dead I can't ride. I'll go and wash my hands again...
