I changed the battery on a 2009 MP3 250. With the scooter on the stand, I started it up. The bike ran roughly and would die if I tried to rev the throttle.

I checked the plug and wire; they were okay. I inserted the brown key as per the owner's manual; there was no change.

Flustered, I took it off the stand and rolled it back on the driveway. It still idled roughly, yet when I gave it some gas, it moved forward.

What is going on? I thought about a test run, but I'm nervous about it breaking down on the road.

Any ideas, dear friends?

Mark

Tell us more about the battery.

Is it brand new, brand, size, what type is it (EFB, AGM, conventional), etc.

And did you you allow the battery to sit for at least 1 hour after adding the acid pack, followed by giving it a overnight charge (10+ hours) at 1Amp charge rate???

The battery takes a significant hit in service life if you don't follow the procedure above prior to cranking for the first time.

Also, electronics don't act nice if the battery is not up to snuff and fully charged.

FWIW, I've tried many brands but Yuasa makes the best and longest lasting motorcycle batteries.

It set for about a week. I am a religious seafoam additive user, so I don't think it is a fuel issue.
Also, Yuasa ytx14-BS via batteries Plus, let set for 24 hours, was the replacement.

Hey there Old as dirt, How ya doin'?

Mark.

take off the air filter and clean the throttle body with throttle body cleaner, you probably got a port clogged.

Understanding you checked the plug, I would install a new one after you do what OAD says above.

How's the fuel?

I have one of these Fluid Extractors, cheap on Amazon.
I would suck out all the gas, and put some fresh Non-Ethanol 90, or Premium Fuel, if its been sitting for a few months.

I have had some strange experiences with mine when the battery is going bad, that's why I always keep a spare ready for a swap, but not after replacing with a new one.

Still waiting on more info from OP if he charged the battery overnight (+-10hrs @ 1Amp) before putting battery in use.

Out of the box the batteries are dry charged, but not fully charged hence needing to charge them fully before installation into the bike. Also, always put the bike on a smart charge (like a Optimate 4) whenever the bike is going to sit for more than a few days.

I have a Yuasa AGM that is pushing 17 years (yes seventeen) using this method vs. some generic batteries that barely last a couple of years using the fill and go method.

Seat Switch?
I apologize in advance if I missed the idea in an earlier post, but it could be the seat safety switch. It will not let the engine run correctly if it it doesn't detect a rider or is damaged.

Steve just came up with the solution to the op's problem

Mr F put the scoot back on center stand, start, double click the tilt lock OFF then you can rev the engine.

Hello Steve and Old As Dirt,

That did it!

I also did charge the battery; merci'

Man oh man, do I like this site! I'll be changing the oil, belt and rollers soon - just like a GTS 250, right? From what I see, it will be easier than my GT 200 from way back when.

Thanks again everyone,
Mark
