I just met up with my undergrad photography professor, who is an Italian from Milan in the 70's and 80's, who I haven't seen in a decade, after she saw me posting a lot of Vespa photos on my Instagram account. She contacted me to talk about Vespas as she grew up riding them and was excited to see my interest in them. I found it very interesting to hear her talk about owning and riding small frame 50ccs and how her friends would tune her 50 to 75cc and the stylish expansion exhausts they would put on to gain an extra 10kph. She said her tuned small frame felt very out of control and all the bolts started to rattle off sheet her friend tuned it! I laughed at that and said that will be me shortly on my Stella. One thing she mentioned which I had never heard of before but found very interesting and won't if anyone had used our know of.. Apparently in Milan in the 70's and 80's they had dedicated "Vespa pumps" which were premix pumps that you could choose your premix percentage and pump gas already premixed! Anyone have photos of a pump like this or used one before? Funny enough, she did say those guys who "really cared" about their Vespas would use the regular pump and mix their own castor oil!

Just thought this was a funny anecdote that I had never heard of and they some of you might have had experience with one, and others like me might find it cool to hear about!

That is awesome. I googled oil premix pumps and got nothing. So it appears this was also a thing in the USA from some of those pictures. I had never heard of this before!

Yes, I am old enough to remember them while growing up in Naples Italy. The pumps had an adjustable percentage control set by the attendant.

Now, the not so great part; oil changes on cars were done at those gas stations, and the attendant used that drained, old, dirty oil to fill the 2-stroke dispensers!
Actual 2-stroke oil was rare and expensive in those days....

And that is why all 2 stroke mopeds, Vespas, and other 2-stroke light motorcycles of that era (60's-70's) used to make thick smoke clouds that contributed in no small way to their ban by the authorities.

My father and Uncle have never seen these growing up in the Northeast usa., 50s-70s so I don't know if it was a thing except for maybe really rural farming areas?

I found these images of little portable ones they kept in garages. I think it would be awesome to have a functional one in the garage.. Albeit I'm sure they are unaffordable collectors items and probably very rare in USA.

Every vintage Vespa addict should have one of these in their garages!

I remember Fina pumps like this in Greece years ago.

This basic pump was made with many different 'jackets' depending on the customer.

Looks like you could just dial in the ratio you wanted.
