"Aprilia Scarabeo?"

A new aquaintance recently purchased a 500 c.c. model...quite the mega-scoot. We we wondering just how to say either of these names. Can anyone provide some phonetic guidance?

You will get a lot of feedback on this -- great bike by the way, with a great, great name (something that's apparently a lot harder to get right than it seems, but something the Italians seem to nail).

In order to get the real feel of the word, really give it gusto... imagine Giada De Laurentiis passing by on her Vespa:

ah-preel-ee-ya SCARE-A-BAYYY-OOO

These pictures should help (you know what a Vespa looks like).

Would that be OOOOOO or OH? I'm no authority, but it seems like OH would be a better phonetic representation of that last part.

A-pril'-ia Sca-ra'-beo

OK, I know that doesn't help much other than the accent is on the second syllable of each word.

Italian is a wonderful language. All vowels only have one sound:

a = ah
e = eh
i = ee
o = oh
u = oo

Of course, try to trill the "r" so you sound Italian when you do it.

Thanks to your replies, I'll be able to get those names out with ease, style and grace, as befits all things Italian!

Thanks for posting those, Packa. Bella! As our Italian friends would no doubt say....as for the Aprilia pronuciation for my $0.02 it should be:

Ug-ly Lu-mp. But hey, that's just me.

ch = k

gn = nye (OK so you can't say "gn" in English!) think of the "ny" in 'canyon'

z = ts... but not a much "t" as if it were zz like 'pizza'!

The realy fun part, though about the 500 is that you get to say:

500 = cinque cento (pron. chinkway chento)

I think Giada De Laurentiis would give it more of a
Cheen-kway Chee-en-to pronunciation.

500 is such a special number in Italy:
