Hours also. But it's more of a question of what is the dollar worth? How much is a diamond worth to a person in the desert dying of thirst?
Since it's a philosophical question |

Hours riding or hours fixing? . 1000% fixing. 500% dollars. Well worth it all. Even more so when the riding hours equal the dollars.

If it's a Lambretta, and the tuning parts are from Casa Performance, then it might be closer to a 50/50.

Let's think this through ...
$10 = 10 hours $100 = 100 hours $500 = 500 hours A dollar buys a LOT of wrench time. A hundred dollars is ten 10 hr days! $200 is a year's worth of 4 hour weekends. I'm thinking I might be close to 50/50. swiss: I was thinking wrenching, but yeah, if you add riding that's going to push me well into the + hours. qa: Agreed. Any way you slice it the enjoyment is priceless. |

I would say money. This is because I live in a region of the world where complete bikes are quite relatively expensive and buying original parts only from overseas gets costly. The whole point, of course, is spending time on my Vespas. I'm not a businessman but an enthusiast so all the time spent is fun for me. I re-sell the parts I've bought that I don't need, but the return is negative or a wash. I wish I had more time to spend (and more money, but it doesn't grow on trees).

Both... but hours... I find wrenching therapeutic. Most of the time. Right now I'm giving it a rest because hit a frustrating patch and wasn't enjoying it. Back into it soon.

This time around - both. This was the filthiest scoot I have ever worked on, cleaning all the caked on clay and grease took a long time. Moneywise, the most expensive as well as it had been run hard and parked outside in the elements.

Hours, 'cause the money is secondary to the enjoyment I get from:
1. Hours wrenching. I really like to see how things are put together, how all the parts mesh and do their specific jobs, and the interesting choices engineers make when accountants get the last say; 2. Hours riding. Smelling smells, hearing sounds, feeling the bike responding to my input, seeing new things, and enjoying the fact I took something worn and made it useful again. I've never more than broken even on a project. I spend the money until it's right, even if it takes time. The satisfaction comes from making it that way.

Overall it is dollars.
When I started out I didn't know much about Vespa and was purchasing books, tools and parts... The last year it has been hours. Both bikes run and I have been putting in some miles lately. I also have a VBC engine project that is taking up some hours. Although it is starting to take dollars too. |

I guess it also helps, that like most of us, there are always some extra parts sitting in a box in the shelf when a part is too far gone to save.
