Hi

Is there a website/online shop where I can get the exact colour match for my scooter to touch up any scuffs and scratches using the details I have for it?

Many thanks

Is Halfords still open in the UK? If so, they can make rattle-cans or touch-up pens to match Vespa/Piaggio colours. I've used them several times, all with great results.

It is still a thing in the UK, but it is all closed up at the moment!

I didn't know what I use when trying to find the exact (in my case) red for this model. I know there are several shades of red off of the shelf, so don't know how I narrow it down.

Cheers

There should be a paint code on a label on the left-hand side of the frame under the seat storage.

I'm hoping I can see detail like that, and not just a bland number. It's Ferrari red in my humble opinion!

I don't know if it is an "exact match", but I got touch up paint from Scooter West in California. It matches well enough for me.

Hi

COLOUR: 894 according to the label, so thanks for that advice. Even Halfords would have a match for this?

For any chips in the paint work, I'll need a primer too. Any recommendations? Any decent online 'how to' guides that you know of?

Thanks all.

894 is Dragon Red. (there is a paint code chart in the wiki)

And yes, Halfords can match it (if they're open) < it appears they are.

Hi

Sorry for the delay - busy with other stuff. I found this on eBay to match this label on my scoot. Look okay to you? Cheers

Can you find this? This is tough stuff. Some of the touch up bottles are lacquer and will wash away if gas hit it. Try this first: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Stops-Rust-12-oz-Protective-Enamel-Gloss-Sunrise-Red-Spray-Paint-7762830/100167186

Spray a little in the cap and use an artist brush for chips.

I presume your scooter is more than 10 years old (as it is a 250). My experience is that it is difficult to perfectly match older paint as it fades somewhat through time - especially red. Good luck with it.

There is no such thing as a perfect paint match out of the can. You have to blend it in. That's why automotive painters get paid good.

Hi

Thanks for the advice, but I'm in England. The old one! Need to source it more locally, and we don't have all the brands that you do.

Couldn't Halfords help? I've never had them fail to match a Piaggio/Vespa paint.

That's exactly what I was thinking. My scooter doesn't have any paint code it just says Dragon Rosso. Contrary to what a lot of people think, red is really hard to match. I would stay away from the Rust-Oleum shit.

The Piaggio paint code for Dragon Red is 894. Having said that, the code isn't much help in getting a good match from an auto paint shop in the US.

Hi have been advised a great place in England. They want me to send in photos of scratched and chips, and then to give them a call so they can advise. Can't say fairer than that. And they ship globally if you guys Stateside need them too.

I used Halfords for my paint source for my Vespa. The issue now is that they only supply that stuff online. You cannot go into their stores as you used to be able to, and get them to mix it up there and then. Unfortunately, on the occasions that I've used them, the paint didn't match even though the codes matched. If all else fails, most auto body shops will scan your bike paint and mix you up the correct colour, and it's a very good match too! The main issue with that though is that the minimum amount they will mix is 1ltr.

Good luck with your touching up. Let us know how it goes.

as pointed out similar story to the one I have just posted.

from my experience

halfords 251 cobalt blue pearlescent 99.9% match, well usable
552 sienna ivory 70% match not usable

Scottpaint 251 cobalt blue pearlescent 99.9% match, well usable
552 sienna ivory 80% match not usable

Autoscott 251 cobalt blue pearlescent 99.9% match, well usable
552 sienna ivory 90% match not usable (20!)

The genuine piaggio chip pens are pretty good

E-Mailed Piaggio asking for a rattle can

The problem I have is there are 3 colours for Code 552

PS to check your paint code enter your vin into the product recall page it will come back with the model and original paint code then it will tell you no recalls on that vin.

Paint has to be blended and mixed to compassionate for fade. You will never get an exact match mixed. You want a matching repair, pay someone that does that for a living.

You use to be able to get rattle cans from piaggio, I know because I got one from my local dealer years ago, the dealer is now out of business. AJ Sutton also use to carry genuine areosols. The touch up paint I have just now is a genuine piaggio part not a looky likey from amazon or ebay.

The problem with 552 is not paint fade.

Quote from Halfords "we can't make that because of the measurement of black in the mix, I will give it a go but cant guarantee a match"

it came out too light, more of an off white/cream.

The can I got made up on Wednesday (from a different source) is very light and has a green tinge to it.

It is not paint fade. I have a spare speedo that has been in the box for 7 years and it matches exactly.

I think the problem (for me) is that recipe for 552 is wrong.

Note: if you use the touch up paint protect it with lacquer within a few days because unprotected it will change colour. Well that's my experience with 552.

The cobalt blue pearlescent on the other hand matches almost 100%. My px when I bought it was painted mat black. I removed the black paint with petrol and steel wool. about 70% of the scoot is original paint, just re lacquered, the remaining 30% is rattle can. You can only spot the difference in bright sunlight at a certain angle.

Thanks for the tip I will contact them and update on how it goes, the main problem I have had so far is whatever the recipe they us is nothing like the colour of the scoot.

Halfords colour match was very similar to the colour marked 1 in the image I posted. The company that made that are the go to guys for paint up here.

I also got a tin years ago, again nothing like Siena Ivory.

My currant thinking is paint the cowl in several layers of touch up paint sand down with 1000 or 1500 grade then clear coat. will take a bit of time though

Try sending them a body panel for them to get an exact match. In my case I sent them the brake reservoir cover from the handlebars of my GTS and the match they made came very close to the original colour. In your case you could send them the front suspension cover to get a match?

You can get that from any Automotive paint shop, just need to make sure they have a color match system. Most PPG Shops have the color match camera or have a rep that will come in with the camera.
