So I went and cocked up, and removed all of the gears from my xmas tree before I realized they had spacing integrated into the gears. I didn't mark anything, and am now at a loss as to how to orient each gear. It's a 1975 125 t.s.

You'll probably see distinguishing marks on the underside of the small one (4th gear), and on the upper side of the big one (1st gear).These show that they were in contact with the rim of the driveshaft (small gear) and the top shim (big gear). The shim goes on top, followed by the circlip.

You can check that you have it right by putting them up against the xmas tree and see that they line up.
