I know it's a bit early but as a cancer survivor, this event is near to me. If anyone is interested in forming a team, please reach out to me via DM.

I've been growing my hair long - hippy long. Haven't had a trim since December 2019. By the time the DGR rolls around in late September, it should be well past shoulder length. Here's the challenge:

Whomever makes the largest donation to my team, can either give me a buzz cut or have someone do it. We will even YouTube it. At 68 I still have a great mane and I dont mind "cutting it for the cause".

The event is being "modified" this year, based on being worldwide and everyone having differing rules fir Covid-19. So they're still encouraging everyone to raise money, but a mass gathering of dapper nattily dressed gentleman and gentle-ladies won't be happening. Rather it will be a solo event, which won't have the same wow factor as a gaggle of bikers all together.

I'm a ride coordinator and got the notice last week. Contact the ride coordinator for Toronto and get the scoop.

Like everyone involved, I'm saddened by the change, but understand the reasoning behind it.

I was not aware of the solo changes. Very saddening, but 100% understandable. I still intend to revive my "Pierre's Hair Affair" fund drive this year though. As a survivor, I owe it to the cause.

What about a socially distanced flashmob ride:

1) identify a downtown loop circuit large enough to accommodate the number of riders who usually participate maintaining 2 meter distancing;

2) no gathering point or stopping places;

3) the ride starts at 9:00, runs till 12:00;

4) riders join the loop wherever they want;

5) encourage riders to have DIY DGR flags.

Guess we'll see what happens. As is in Toronto the bike scene is pretty quiet. Town Moto still only doing curbside and open Fri and Sat I think. What I do want here is motorcycle parking enforced! All the cages in our dedicated spots without getting tickets is driving me nuts. Hard to find parking by the office at times.

The ride... Maybe I will do it this year but don't have much to wear. Suppose I could throw something together. I'm very much just a jeans and boots guy with maybe a Fred Perry Polo to fancy things up.

That was "me" last year. Black jeans, white shirt and tie under a v-neck sweater - all very Ivy League.

Here is an update about the ride

https://www.gentlemansride.com/blog/dgr-2020-update

DGR 2020 UPDATE - THIS YEAR WE RIDE SOLO
The 2020 Distinguished Gentleman's Ride is not cancelled.

On the 27th of September - We Ride! However, it will not be a mass-participation event. Riders will be encouraged to dress dapper and ride solo to comply with social distancing measures. DGR is a worldwide inclusive event raising funds for men's health. With the current global situation proving that we can't all ride together physically, the event this year will take an adjusted format to connect every rider to the cause from around the world no matter their social distancing regulations.

We will be riding but it will be solo. As always, we will be riding together on the same day, for the same cause. Socially distanced, but globally connected.

Please refer to our FAQ below for any specific questions relating to the event.

FAQ
Is DGR for 2020 cancelled?
No, this year's event is not cancelled. It will, however, be taking place in an adjusted format. All riders will still be able to register to ride, select their country and city, fundraise for men's health.

On the day of the ride, however, there will be no mass ride in your city. You are encouraged to Ride Solo either by yourself or with a pillion.

What does it mean to do a solo event?
This will mean there are no mass participation events. Riders will be encouraged to dress dapper and ride solo to comply with social distancing measures.

My city is letting us ride in groups? Can we still ride in groups?
This year's event is about riding solo but connecting globally. We are not encouraging anyone to ride in groups or with multiple people.

Can I ride with my family if we live together?
Yes, however only if restrictions in your local city or state permit you to ride together and you are ensuring all social distancing laws are being followed.

I can't ride on the day by myself? Is it possible to complete this over the weekend?
Yes, if you are unable to ride on Sunday 27th Sept 2020 it is no problem to complete the ride on Saturday 26th Sept 2020.

Do we still need to stick to city roads or can we go for a longer ride than a normal DGR event?
The foundation of the event was built on riding through the heart of the city and it is very much encouraged to ride through slower city roads. This will be at your discretion. Please ensure you observe our Safety Information regarding riding.

How long should we be riding for?
We recommend riding for no longer than 2 hours.

How do we connect globally and share photos with each other?
Once registered and you have completed your ride, there will be directions regarding uploading and sharing photos. Along with this, we will have a live map where riders can find photos shared across the world.

Can I select any city or country even if there wasn't previously a ride in my city?
Yes, when registration is opened, you will have the opportunity to add your city or country if there is no specific ride in the dropdown list.

What happens if the forecast is looking like rain?
As there is no mass participation event, if the weather looks like it will rain on Sunday it is no problem to complete the ride any day before or after the actual day.

Do we complete the previous year's ride route or can we ride anywhere?
There will be no defined route this year; it is at your own discretion to decide where you wish to ride. This is about riding solo but together with riders around the world.

There are a lot of bikes on the road "up" where I am (north of St Clair), even a few more Vespas than I am accustomed to seeing.

Wouldn't worry about the clothing that much . . . how can you not be dapper on Vespa?

Could we do a socially-distanced small group?
4-6 Vespas in formation couldn't be too bad.

I was thinking more Ural as it has an even more vintage look than the GTV and can carry a well dressed sidecar monkey.

BTW yeah a small group is not going to be stopped by the DGR policy enforcement team BUT I think they really do not want to discourage large groups going out. So basically they are saying all the right things and I get that. I'm positive small groups will go out and that is a decision for the group.

FWIW, today I spoke to someone that was involved in a rap video last weekend in Toronto. They had HUNDREDS of bikes together for the shoot with little social distancing. All very against the rules and I'm not sure that was such a smart thing to do.

I am going to ride solo in this year's Gentleman's Ride.

Here is (finally) my vlog post on last year's ride, along with some arm-twisting to encourage all MVers to participate and help fund cancer research.

Hopefully Soul Surfer and Il Gatto da Vicenza will enjoy this, they do figure semi-prominently in the video:

Obviously they're trying to put distance between this event and Sturgis, the organizers of which were resolute in making sure the event took place as usual and were accused of encouraging close interaction and spreading the Big C. There is zero value in politicizing a charitable event.

Nobody from DGR is going to be out breaking up groups riding together. They have no authority to do that and people get together to ride anyway every weekend of their own volition and following their own distancing standards. If problems arise on the DGR date because people were hanging out before or after, or assembling/behaving in ways that violate local ordinances, it's clear that wasn't sanctioned as part of the event.

My intention is to ride solo, and I wouldn't mind if Soul Surfer, Il Gatto and Harbinger tagged along, all socially distanced.

I have a route in mind: from the north down Avenue Road to Lakeshore, along Lakeshore west to Spadina, north on Spadina to the traffic circle just north of College, back down Spadina to Lakehore, east to University, and up to Queen's Park traffic circle, loop the circle a few times then park on the west side of the circle opposite Queen's Park, chat masked and socially distanced, then disperse.

I'll head out to do that at 9:00. Hopefully the weather won't scuttle the plan.

If it turns out that there are too many like-minded folks I will scuttle the plan and ride off solo.

I was hoping to join in if we had a small group organized.
Unfortunately, my M2 exit course/exam has been re-scheduled to the 26th.
What really has me messed-up is that my wife has recently been diagnosed with stage 3 renal cell carcinoma, and I am having a hard time with it. Going out riding two days in a row with this going on doesn't seem fair.

Ciao Gatto ... I'm sorry to hear these things.
I leave you a Vicenza proverb in dialect:
"Amar e no vegnir amà, xe come forbirse 'l cul senza aver cagà"
If you are of venetian origin (i am half of it ... Rovigo) you understand that it is a wish.

Steve,
I met Firenze at our last ride. She is such a wonderfully nice person. Please convey my sincerest wishes for a thorough recovery. As cancer survivors (both Bonnie and me), we really don't want more member to our club.

Wishing you both strength. If you wish to chat please feel free reach out.

Steve best wishes to you and your wife and I'm sure you will be there for her and offer all the strength and love you can muster.

Good luck with the ride guys. I'll be thinking of you from the northern Bruce. Hope you're getting the same weather we are, a beautiful morning.

Yeah ... I'm sorry too, I've also been a victim of (pancreatic) cancer and I know what's going on ... terrifying.
But I'm still here, obviously it was destiny.
Thanks for the invitation David
