I ordered a new ROOF Boxer V8 helmet last week that should be here tomorrow (SHOULD)...last time I checked, it was living large at the FedEx facility in Paris.

In the meantime, I have two older helmets (both full-face). One is over 20 years old and has basically just become a display item...it was my old autox helmet that I haven't worn in years. The other is an ICON Mainframe helmet that I used to wear when I had a Harley. When I sold the Harley, I got into karting and used it for that for a while. Then, it sat on a shelf for a couple of years (inside the house). It's never been in a crash, and essentially appears new...although it doesn't necessarily have that "new helmet smell" anymore. I've been wearing the ICON while I wait for my ROOF to arrive. Is it still an acceptable 2nd string helmet or should I turn it into a fashionable lamp or something? I know many people say to replace helmets after 5 years (or being dropped or in a crash). I've always loved this helmet, but is it time to hang it up?

Yes if you want to be safe in a crash but it is up to you.

I've donated old helmets to Fire/EMT units for training.

It's an excellent use of an old helmet.

No one gets training that could save a life with a helmet bird house though.

Tíis quite true but however my son who is a Paramedic says they get so many donated with so few available training days theyíve got an entire closet filled floor to ceiling with them. Plus after theyíre done with them they can still be used for birdhouses.

My advice on old helmets----throw them away. I use 2 new helmets a year, 3/4 type, priced right, white color. works for me....and they always smell nice.
