Hi all,

On a ride today my friends 1965 Allstate started making a strange noise. Sounded like the gears are hitting on something - a tic, tic, tic noise. Some other things:

Hard to get into first gear
Stops making the noise once in gear
Pulling in the clutch changes the noise but it doesn't go away, even in neutral
Pushing the scoot in neutral you can hear the noise

Before pulling the engine out and opening it up, is this something that can be adjusted out? Is the clutch not engaging enough? Simple clutch adjustment? Is this a worn out cruciform? Something else?

Ideas appreciated.

Thanks,

A possibility is the cruciform slide has come un-screwed. This happens sometimes.

To test, raise the back wheel with the scooter upright, so it can be spun. Gently spin it in neutral. If there is an issue it will click. If it's perfect there will be no noise at all.

If it clicks 1st check is to take off the gear selector and make sure the slider is tight. This is a left hand thread. If it's loose do not fully uncrew it or it may not go back.
2nd check, confirm the gear selector is not worn out. Watch the batwing and wiggle (technical term) the arm and confirm there is almost no movement of the arm. The pin can be loose or the batwing pawl piviot. Either fault will ruin a good gearbox in time.
3rd check, with tight shaft and not wobbly selector, refit the selector and adjust the quantity of selector gaskets to get it to spin in neutral with no click at all, as necessary. Can take a few refits to get right.

I checked and reset the privacy settings to public. Might also be your web browser.

With the motor it was clicking a little faster than once a second.
