So to cut a long story short I have a hire scooter I am riding at the moment due to a minor accident ( the other guy backed into me).

Itís a Honda SH 300 and there is just no comparison to the GTS 300. Throttle response, body vibration, exhaust note, ride quality and looks just donít match up and you still canít get a full face helmet under the seat.

Let me understand ... is this a favorable judgment for the Vespa or against?

It sounds like a critical assessment of the Honda, but that's understandable when comparing it with an Italian thoroughbred

Definitely favourable for the Vespa GTS 300. After starting my riding career on very warn out 70ís Vespas I didnít think of the brand as thoroughbreds. But they certainly are compared to the Honda.

Yes, the Vespa is a great scooter. I've ridden other smaller CC (under 400) scoots and they did not feel the same. Mind you I feel the same way about BMW bikes and how they feel and ride. Lots of us have our favourites and often for good reason. I'd have to think if the OP was given the Motorrad 400CC scoot they would have liked the experience. The BV350 is also a good ride as well FWIW.

The ideal for a final judgment would be to have ridden many scooters of many different brands ...

the sh300 engine wears its dirtbike roots on its sleeve eh? the storage space is pretty terrible but i'd rather ride those 16inch wheels through the potholes of london anyday i currently own a sh300i and whilst ugly, it outbrakes and handles a gts anyday and won't rot, cheaper to insure yadayadya.

but yes its not a vespa, you look like a pizza delivery driver. its not a passion bike and is seen as transport first! fancy saying that in a vespa forum

That's interesting. I've always heard that the Honda SH300 was better than the Vespa 300 in every aspect except looks, which is subjective.

Having said that, I recently bought a 2009 300GTS Super and absolutely love it.

I think the main criticism of the SH300 for me is the rather bad response to potholes on the road. It just crashes through them jarring ones spine in a way the Vespa GTS doesn't. Quite surprising especially when you consider the SH has bigger wheels. Otherwise the SH is quite a good bike. Looks like shite, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Yes the Vespa GTS300 is just in a class of their own, it's quirky, fun and nobody takes them seriously. I get no agro from any motorists on my daily commutes. Vespas have their quirks (sometimes annoying too) but what Italian brand doesn't (coming from one who have owned Alfo Romeos in the past)

For the money the SYM Citycom 300i is a way better buy than the Honda SH300i for a scoot you just want to use as an appliance. I did 48 000 kms on mine with no issues and it was for sale the other day with 79 000 kms on.

Ha! True. But the biggest knock usually against Vespa is price vs performance (bang for your buck). Very few people dare call them ugly because they are truly iconic. They are expensive for what you get, think it cost me around 11 K to get the Vespa how I want it.

If you can find one . (in fairness there is an SH subforum on the PCX Forum, but it looks like no one has posted there since April)

But used they're a really good deal. I paid Ä2,400 for my 2009 GTS300 and it runs and looks much better than any 2009 Honda SH.

I think the BV looks better than a Vespa. Even before I bought one, um two.
And yes, the SH is ugly but you can't deny it is one ass kicking 150

Shcooter.com is the SH150 forum. It's pretty dead there.
