A few weeks back a dog ran into the street directly in front of me. I could not avoid the dog and I unfortunately hit the dog. The dog broke his leg and I crashed. There is much damage to the body as well as the trim. It was dumped on its right side. The handlebars seen to be off center from the impact. Iím sure this can be adjusted. Most of the items can be fixed but what is puzzling is the check engine light. Does anyone have any ideas to what might cause the check engine light to come on after a crash?

First question is: will the engine turn over and start?
You can straighten the handlebars yourself. Prop wheel against something and twist.

First question - as this is a 2020 scooter, do you have collision/comprehensive insurance? if so, you really need to have a competent shop exam the scooter and give you an estimate for repairs.

Hope you're healing well - also the dog.

Bodywork repairs are costly on the Vespa.
Get the damage properly assessed.
You may get an unpleasant surprise.

I hope the injury heals soon!

Ditto on all of the above. Vespas are notorious for being expensive to repair any damage to the body. The unibody design is part of what makes a Vespa a Vespa but adds to the complexity of repairs.

Hope you heal up quickly.

Just to be clear, the dogís leg was broken.

I hope the dog was treated properly and is healing.

I hope so to! My sister lost a yorkie to a car and it was devastating to the driver and her family.

Some time ago I ran over a cat ... it wasn't pleasant for both of us. He still has eight lives and I have one pair less underpants.

Thanks for all your input! I have insurance but the dog owner wants to settle outside of his home owners. He was really fair and I get to keep the damaged GTV. I might try and fix it but am thinking of selling it as is. It only has 750 miles.

Let's try to cheer you up, sorry for my slightly hilarious (but true) comments.
The cat was also black and in Italy it is bad luck to run over one.
PS: there are also scooters that do not have sheet metal body parts so expensive to repair, perhaps less fascinating than the Vespa but equally fun.

Thanks for your help. I'm going to try and have the scooter repaired locally. It is mostly body work. Can someone point me in the right direction finding the right paint to match my scooters Sei Giorni Grey paint? It is a matte finish.

I hope you got a good settlement as the insurance company would have totaled the scoot. I had a woman back into me at a gas station when I was waiting to exit, both feet down, hit in cowl area and I managed to guide the scoot to the ground. Dent in cowl, scrapes on other side where I laid it down. 2016 Sprint 150, ~1,000 miles, totaled but I bought it back for $700 still riding it. The other $4,000+ from insurance I used towards buying a pair of 2006 GTS250's

In order to get the body work done, the body shops around here would not touch it unless everything was stripped off and only the body given to them. Needless to say I am living with the dents/scrapes.

you may be in it for more than the settlement you got.

We would like to see pix of the damaged bike. That might generate more advice/comments.

The Vespa color paint code is labeled on the frame under the seat. Where you source a larger supply of that I don't know. I would think a body shop can handle that.

csnoel, sorry to hear this! It could have been worse though, I'm sure. Hope you and of course the dog heal ok. Do get the bike professionally checked over for damage. Don't try and bend the steering straight without undoing the steering clamp bolts. It's easy to do. That way you don't stress anything. If you don't undo the bolts it makes it more likely that the steering can go out of kilter again if you hit a pot hole.

Often they say this, because it shouldn't be more than a couple hundred bucks to fix a moped, or they can buy another one online for $1000 or so. But then they find out how much a Vespa is worth, and you've got some pretty big issues if an accident report wasn't filed. I can assure you that the damage to your Vespa is going to well exceed the minimum that your State requires for you to file an accident report, the one you were legally required to file within ten days of the accident. So if you haven't filed a crash report, once the dog owner finds out what it is going to cost to repair this bike, you might find yourself hanging out to dry. Someone who is a nice guy when they think it's about $500 to make things right and keep it off their insurance can turn on a dime when it's thousands of dollars and there's no proof of what actually happened, especially if they know you broke the law by not filing an accident report.

Along that road they should put up a road sign that says
"Beware of the dog in the middle of the road!"

Thanks or all your help. Good News. the dog owner ame by last weekend ans cut a check for $1,000 less than the new Vespa. He wants me to keep the old one and sell it. In these times, it is nice to know that there are good people out there. Im going to try and fine a paint code that will match the paint on the damaged model. I have ordered new parts. I am not planning on getting it back to perfect. I will either sell it or sell my wife's Sprint 150 and we can both ride a 300. They are delivering the new one today.

Great news and it's good to know there are good people out there considering the world we are living in now.
