Hi all,

I have a 2006 LX 50, and have been loving riding through London to work (got it NOx tested for £175, didn't even show a trace and now exempt from CC and ULEZ).

I need to upgrade it though as need a bit more power for steep hills, and it's slow of the lights but otherwise fine.

I've been looking on Facebook Marketplace and there are a number of 125cc reg as 300cc, I take it that these are ringers and the last thing I want to do is buy a nicked bike.

From reading on here, they buy a battered 125, then steal a 300, and ring it, can anyone explain the ring process so as I don't end up with one, any obvious details?

I don't know why the police do something about them, also came across log books, chassis, immobiliser/key reprogramming.

Thanks

Fighting Vespa Theft - Parting out Engines
Hey, my friends across the pond. I am proud of the fact that my
ancestors immigrated from England. Actually, the were sentenced to
"Transport to the Colonies" for supporting Cromwell against the Crown.
Sorry for getting off topic.

You are the land of Sherlock Holmes - surely you can put a stop to this
Vespa theft thing. Unless, that scoundrel Professor Moriarty is behind
all this.

First clue if it's registered as something it's not, chances are the bike is a ringer or the engine is.

Check the vin number, usually found under the seat when you pull the pet carrier out.

You can then run a check, you can also check reg plates on on the Dvla site but if stolen they could be cloning the plate of a legit bike.

I'd say best bet is to go speak to a reputable dealer, where abouts in London are you?

Hmm,
I'm not sure what exactly is in this sad tale of a video any longer, but apparently the London police aren't going to help out unless you pay them to look into a theft.

While I dearly love London, video's like this have given me second thoughts about ever having a scooter to ride there.

So I think you rightfully should be wary of the used scooter market that you are looking at.

The youngsters in the picture and the seller joining FB in 2020 to offload the bike would have my spidey senses tingling.

Since there are plenty of GTS insurance write offs, it's common for peeps witha GTS 125 to source a 300 engine and swap it. This gives you a 300 without needing to get a licence. They often dont check the engine number when you get an MOT, so you dont bother informing the DVLA of the engine change.
However, the engine may be from a stolen bike.
If you ride a GTS in London someone will steal it from you eventually......

Does the number of the engine in back of transmission case correlate do the vin number?

Lol... yeah, caught that too. Maybe I'm anal, but I think proper spelling is usually a good start to a deal....as are good pictures.
