I tore apart my P200 looking at one problem and found 4 others One of them being both piston rings were glued in to their slots with lots of blow by. The top end has 2 years of use on it and while the crown looks fair, the ring grooves are all gunked up.

Anyone got any recommendations for an overnight soak to help clean out the grooves? The dental pick/screwdrivers aren't doing the best job by themselves.

I had a piston with stuck rings. An old broken ring, a file to make sure the broken edges were clean and sharp, some simple green, and some elbow-grease and the grooves cleaned up really nice.

Hope this helps.

Does this happen because of the type of two stroke oil being used? Is there a better synthetic oil that could reduce the issue?

Simple green mixed with near boiling water and let it soak a bit.

Mr. Muscle oven cleaner.

Although can says not on aluminum it doesn't actually harm aluminum. Might take the shine of aluminum plate but does no serious harm.

If overly concerned you can test yourself on an old bit of aluminum.

Another vote for oven cleaner. It's sodium hydroxide... a relatively mild acid. My brand is "Rinso" ... lemon scented.

dollar store oven cleaner for the quickness.

pine-sol for an overnight.

carb dip/carb cleaner or brake clean for an in between the two, especially good with a wire brush and part of an old broken ring to scrape.

Nerd emoticon Sodium hydroxide is an alkali, not an acid, (weak or otherwise)...

Just be sure you don't scrape up the bottom 'land' of the ring groove as that is the seal for the ring.

Use soft plastic/wood scrapers or tooth picks

It's lye. It works. Don't be frightened of it.

No word of a lie! Laughing emoticon (But use sensible precautions).

BTW 'lye' refers to a group of metal hydroxides- usually potassium or sodium hydroxide...
