Hey guys, so i am interested in getting a top case with the included backrest. i dont have any mods on the vespa currently, just have the standard factory seat bar. So i just want to make sure, in order to install the top case i need to have a different seat bar, one that the top case sits on, correct? so i have to get a rack as well as the top case..... just making sure. thank you!

Yes, you do need a rear rack to mount the Vespa topcase. There are two different rear racks for the GTS. One is composed of two parts and flips up when not in use, the other is just a plain rack which remains in the down position. The plain rack is usually used to support an OEM topcase.

Install of the rack and case is pretty easy. Robot has a good video showing how to do it with both the folding and fixed (what I have) rack.

OEM topcase
I recently bought an OEM topcase and it worked with the standard OEM fold down rack on my 2018 GTS 300 Touring.

Here is a picture of my GTS with the fixed rack while I was waiting for the case to come into stock. The top case slides onto two metal tongues on the rack and a screw through the bottom of the case holds it in place to the rack. Note you will also need a different screw cover for the spot where the lower arm of the rack attaches to the frame.

Do yourself a favor, get a GIVI. I have the V47. They arenít color coordinated but built better & larger. Additionally I installed an AdMore light kit in it and mounted a rack on top.

Agree on Givi---my e-46 box (made 1998) has over 500,000 miles on various bikes/scooters. They have backrests that bolt to box. Their racks are foolproof.

Another fan of the Givi top case. I have a 37L that was on the black 2009 GTS I had, and switched it over to the 2020 GTS HPE I bought in October. I was able to find a colored insert for it that matches the Vespa blue - it pulls it all together (in my eye)...

I like the look and storage better than the Vespa OEM top case. If you want, a passenger pad can be fitted; no need for me, since my wife rides her own scoot. I added the fixed rack (had the flip down one on the 2009, but didn't see any use for that since the top case is always on there. Also, with the Givi, it is one button push to remove the top case if you need just the flat rack for strapping something on there.

I went for a refurbished 2010 top case.

Because the Australian import is so useless, I had to find my own anyway, and took the opportunity to use one tha I could find the Admore lighting kit to

Step 1: Topcase repainted to match body (colour not available from importer)

Step 2: Seat and backpad re-covered to match, using a black / yellow colour combination from a 2020 seat.

Step 3: Fit Admore LED light kit

You can go with Givi or Viking, they both have top trunk cases and those do have plenty of room in them. Check out all the options and choose wisely.

I have the Shad SH40: https://www.shadusa.com/collections/sh40-cargo. There is an optional backrest for it.

I chose a Shad over a Givi because Shad does not require you to lock it. That is, I can open/close the case without having to use the key (I'm lazy). When I need to lock it I use the key.

I used X9 topcases on our VCdM Vespas - this was in Cinque Terre, Italy:

If you get a Givi E370 or V46, Admore Lighting makes a kit to give you tail, brake and turn signals. I installed in each of these that I have and is a big visibility improvement.
