I know these tires (Pirelli Scooter Angels) are directional but I've never seen anything like this before. Presumably it means they are intended to rotate in one direction on the front and the opposite direction on the rear, which seems odd. Can NSM confirm?

Also, raises an interesting choice whether to mount the spare as a front tire or a rear tire.

Thanks.

The tread pattern is designed to displace water on acceleration when it's placed on the rear. It's reversed on the front to displace water when braking. I don't think it makes a lot of difference in dry conditions.

I normally use Zipppy 1 tires, and they are directional. I live in the rainy NW, and when i rotate the tires, i rarely but rarely get around to dismounting the tires have them rotating the correct direction. And i've found that the rear tire has a MUCH greater chance of getting a flat than the front.

Most modern tires are now like this. To the untrained / uninformed, the front tire will look like it's mounted the wrong way. I had a customer a few years back with a Beverly 500, that came to me after I had changed his tires and told me that a guy that run a tire shop for cars, told him that I'm clueless and that I had mounted the tire the wrong way. I showed him the arrows and told him to go and tell the guy the same thing he said about me.

And yes, Pirelli Angels are like this. I have them on my T5 and so far they're the best tires I have ever tried on 10" (for our roads)...

Thanks guys. It's always nice to know the reason behind the rule.

@ SaFiS: Your post in the General Discussion section was one of several positive reviews that influenced my decision.

The Stella I picked up last year still has the original Zippy 3s with 2005 date codes, so something had to be done. I like these Scooter Angels because (a) I just like Pirelli tires (even if they come from Indonesia), (b) the tread design looks like it will yield a nice balance between dry and wet performance with a smooth and quiet ride, and (c) here in the U.S. they are selling for only $31 apiece. The only catch is these do not seem to be selling particularly well in the U.S. and inventory here is getting stale. The date codes on the ones I got are from 2018 and 2019--hence the low price. Looking forward to taking these for a test ride when winter finally releases me from her icy grip.

$31 apiece is a steal. Where are you finding them at that price?

RevZilla.com. $31.58 for 3.5 x 10. Free shipping on orders over $39.99. I didn't bother but you might even be able to negotiate for the newest available date codes.

That's because the front tyre runs over the nail/screw while it's lying flat, kicks it up ready for the rear wheel to run into the sharp end. Run a 3 wheel scoot and it doesn't happen as the front wheel follows a different path to the rear wheel.

Seems odd to me as well.. this correctly mounted? Treads on back look upside down from the front.
Photo show the arrow directions written on the tire

Is that the front or rear tire? It's mounted correctly if it's the rear wheel, wrong if it's the front. As the bike is rolled forward the arrow should point in the direction the tire's rotating.
