Let's pretend* I dropped a washer from the clutch cover into the gearbox on my PX engine... What are my chances of catching a fish?

I enjoyed rebuilding the engine, but I'm not delighted at the prospect of splitting it again..

let me tell you a story about a small frame that had, like, half a dozen woodruff keys in the gearbox... spoiler alert, it did not end well.

But! - before you split - if you can't fish - take the motor out - put it on the bench and use gravity and just shake.
If you cant get it to fall out - put it on engine stand - flip it over so you have gravity getting it close to access through clutch - and then fish with a magnet on a coat hanger.
When the magnet falls off and into the case - then go ahead and split.

Dropped a woodruff key and fished it out with one of these... got lucky.

I was weighing up splitting on the bike vs removing the engine and not splitting- I'd imagined the former would be easier... no?

Personally, I’d split in the bike quick and dirty if my fishing expedition didn’t yield results.

You just put it together so it should come apart quick.

It’s down down and dirty but that’s the route I’d take after fiddle fucking around for a bit.

It's a PX; it will come apart from the flywheel side. i'm not even sure i would fiddle with it; maybe hold the engine upside down and see by luck if it drops out near the clutch.

Did you try taking a video with a phone to see if you can see it? Why are they called phones? Should be a tablet with cellular service.

Used one of these also, might help see it and not knock it further down.

I'd never feel comfortable riding without knowing.

That being said, if it were me, I'd split the engine and not find the washer. 2 years later I'd find it on the floor where it rolled away from me. I found a small frame selector ball a couple years after I lost it behind the dryer.

I'd put it back together and curse my luck, but ride with clear conscience.
