I thought there might be some interest in looking at a scooter forum from the Philippines http://www.euroscoot.net/ They are very similar to ModernVespa.com as a scootering community. I started riding scooters when I lived/worked in the Philippines for Bechtel, San Francisco. Riding over there in their traffic and with those road conditions was exciting, let me tell ya!

I like your avatar, gotsand! Euroscoot is a nice site too, but it seems to be a bit commercial. I enjoy the non-commercial, grass-roots style here on Modern Vespa. In my view, I'm less inclined to post on a commercial site. Hey, if I was interested in generating revenue for someone else, I'd be freelancing articles for the cycling publications.

Hi guys, just saw your posts about euroscoot.net
Btw, I'm the admin for that site and let me tell you that whatever notion you had of the site being commercial is totally off the mark. I've been keeping that site up for a good 5 years all for the love of the Vespa....well European scoots anyway.

The site started as a meeting place for our club members online (Euroscoot SC), plus a way for the club officers to pass on info. It has grown quite a bit, I must admit, attracting Filipino Vespa enthusiasts all over the country.

You are most welcome to share your stories or just shoot the breeze with fellow scooterists this side of the Pacific.

Regards!!

Welcome BoyG.
I just revisited your site. My pop-up blocker logged 3 pop-ups for just accessing your site. Your home page is filled with commercial advertisements. Someone is profiting there. We seem do have a difference of opinion, but that's okay. You do your thing, and I'll do mine.

Hey, I'm heading to Manila end of this week, where would you recommend I to to check out the scooter scene while I'm there?

addicted,
no worries there, been trying to get rid of the pop-ups because i really don't know how they got there.
Haven't had time to go over the code in a long while since I've been busy with work. If anyone is making money out of the site, it definitely is not us....hehe

We've uploaded a video of our ride last year to the area of the Philippines called, Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte. It's practically the top of the mainland, Luzon.

The video is here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qcOh988WGg

Hope you guys enjoy this.

addicted, BoyG, the culprit appears to be (at least in part) "webstats4u," which is a free webstat tracking company that BoyG signed up for and put on his website on the bottom left nav bar. How do I know this? Same thing happened on my site and I figured it out.

Here is the problem. WebStats4U's "free" tracker generates popups on YOUR site, which they make the money for. They also track YOUR users and use that information for THEIR own purposes. You need to delete their code! See below.

The problem is, you didn't read WebStats4U's terms carefully enough. In fact, I'll bet you did not read them at all because you didn't even sign up for WebStats4U. From the source code on your site, I see that you signed up for another free tracker called Nedstat that didn't cause popups. But then, unbeknownst to you, Netdstat was bought by another company (called WMS) that changed the rules without requiring any action on your part. Sleazy.

This is what they NOW say in their terms and conditions:
Quote:
"With the installation of Webstats4U on the site it is accepted that WMS has the right to place advertisements on the site in any format or through any channel, including but not limited to e-mail, layer ads, pops, banners and other usual formats without any forewarning and it is furthermore accepted that WMS takes no responsibility for the advertising content and that WMS shall not be liable for any losses incurred regarding this advertising.

With the installation of Webstats4U on the site it is accepted that WMS has the right to use the collected data for commercial purposes in line with WMS's privacy policy."
http://www.webstats4u.com/terms/

Holy cow! Give me a break! Here is the source code that you have to delete:
<script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript" >
<!--
  nedstatbasic("AC948AdJpFAnc4IHtda2kf9hvTVw", 0);
// -->
</script>
<noscript>
<a target="_blank" href="http://www.nedstatbasic.net/stats?AC948AdJpFAnc4IHtda2kf9hvTVw"><img
src="http://m1.nedstatbasic.net/n?id=AC948AdJpFAnc4IHtda2kf9hvTVw"
border="0" width="18" height="18"
alt="Nedstat Basic - Free web site statistics
Personal homepage website counter"></a><br>
<a target="_blank" href="http://www.nedstatbasic.net/">Free counter</a>
</noscript>
<!-- End Nedstat Basic code -->
I would suggest you do so immediately and sign up instead with another tracker run by people with integrity like:

http://www.sitemeter.com/

I use them on my own site, they are legit (and no, I don't work for them )

THE MORAL OF THE STORY?

Webmasters, be VERY careful whose javascript code you put on your web site, and check up on it once in a while. This shows how javascript can be used to repurpose the original code on your site to do completely different things than you expected or wanted.

Glad to hear it, BoyG, but... I have some bad news and some good news.

The bad news is, you're still getting some pop-ups.

The good news is, I think I've found the problem again.

It is your Tag Board message board plugin...
Quote:
Why does my free board have popup ads?
Tag-board has been generating popups on the free boards since December of 2003. They are set up in a rotation so that no person should receive more than 1 popup per day. We also monitor the contents of the ads shown, keeping them clean. The reason for the ads is to help pay for our servers to keep the boards free. We are sorry for the inconvience.
If you wish to get rid of the ads please upgrade to enhanced. Thank you.
http://tagboard.onlinesupportdesk.net/index.php?_a=knowledgebase&_j=questiondetails&_i=45&nav2=Troubleshooting

If you don't want to get rid of it, it looks like you'd have to upgrade to a paid version ($20/year) to eliminate the pop-ups.

Here's the source, just in case:
<table cellpadding="2" cellspacing="0" border="0" class="forumline">
   <tr>
    <td class="catHead" height="28"><span class="cattitle">ShoutBox</span></td>

  </tr>

      <script>netscape_support();</script>
    </td>
  </tr>
  <tr>

      <a href="http://www.tag-board.com/" target="_new">Powered by TagBoard Message Board</a>

  </tr>
