Very useful article. Just a small addition - In Europe (certainly the UK) Piaggio have neglected to fill in all the fields of the 17 digit format.
Thus an ET2 might read *ZAPC1600000nnnnnn* where 'n' is the serial number. Most inconvenient and frustrating.
Until I have 100 posts, I'll put my VIN here. However, I inherited my Vespa and it came with contradictory documentation (LX 150 Manual, but LX 50 registration papers). I believe it is a Vespa LX 50 2008 (not LX 50 4T).
The Chassis VIN (inside the pet carrier and on a plate on the dash) is ZAPC386B285xxxxxx.
The Engine VIN (stamped on the back of the transmission) is C385Mxxxx.
