My steering column lock appears to be broken (the key turns, but doesn't do anything.) Is it worth replacing? I saw on line a step-by-step thing that involves drilling out the body, etc. As a newbie, is this something I can do myself?

On mine I have to turn the handlebars all the way to the left, put the key in, turn it, then pull the handlebars to the right a little in order to get it to catch. Have you played with it at all? How much does the key turn? I believe there was a post about drilling one out a few months ago, and the poster had never done it before. I think it ended up turning out ok, so I'm sure you could handle it.

Thanks Meg. I guess I haven't messed with it enough. I'll try what you said when I get home and let you know. The key turns about 90 degrees to the left I think. I'm sure I can do the drill thing; just wanted to make sure that method was kosher.

Has the steering column lock NEVER worked? It could be like mine where I didn't know for about two or three weeks that the lock needed to be pushed in to get it to work.

1) Turn the handlebar all the way to the left
2) turn the key counterclock-wise
3) Try to push the key into the steering column while slowly turning the key clockwise. You may need to wiggle the handle bar at little to the right and left until the key and the locking mechanism pushed into the steering column.

On my Rally I had a frozen lock. I spayed in with WD40 jiggled it around a bit then I pushed it in and turned it a few times. It took a few times but it worked.

I thought I fucked with it enough, but I didn't try pushing the key into the steering column yet. Thanks.

Yeah. I sorta kicked myself when I figured that out. I would have REALLY kicked myself if I actually ordered a new locking mechanism.

The funny thing is my wife, who had a P200e from 1989-1991, didn't even remember that you had to push the key in until I figured it out.

My steering lock FELL OUT today while I was power washing it!!! (rust). If I can find the rest of the pieces for it, and a key, I'll be in bidness.
